lionel 1012 transformer

I have been out of model railroading for nearly 5 decades.  I now have grandchildren and am looking to get some old equipment running again.  Is there any way to open up a Lionel 1012 35 watt transformer.  The cord is completely deteriorated.

Thanks,

Thank you,

The data you sent was very helpful.  I was cautious about prying the cover off...just not sure.

Thanks for taking the time.

Since your transformer only has 35 watts, I would recommend getting a stronger one. Something like this:
