I've had the wheels off of mt Marx 666 before. They are pressed on the axle. I used a round punch a little smaller in diameter than the axle and a 1 oz ball peen hammer.
I'll guess that the wheels on a Marx 999 are also press ift on the axles like the 666.
If you do decide to take the wheels off, take good notes of the relative positions of the drivers and connecting rods from one side of the locomotive to the other. If you put it together wrong, they will bind and you will have to drive the wheels back off to re-position them correctly.
Remember - knowledge is learning from your mistakes. Wisdom is learning from other's mistakes....
Good luck.
this is the first time of me taking a marx engine apart to try to repair it. i think the reversing unit is bad but i am not sure. i have read a couple posts saying that i need to take the wheels off but i have no clue how to do that. is there an easy way to get them off or is this for professionals?
thanks for your help in advance!
