I'm considering making a 4-8-2 or similar engine from some newer Lionel can motored 4-4-2 engines. I think I will need some more gears to place between drive axles to power them and keep the side rods timed. I have some running plastic Marx engines not worth much that I could take parts from. I also took apart some older Lionel plastic shelled Scout engines and might have gears from them around here somewhere. Do all of the gears have the same teeth spacing? My layout is has 042 and larger switches and curves. Will I need to remove the flanges on the inner drive axles? If so, whats the best way to do that? I don't have a grinder.

I would order the gears (and the little studs they run on) from Lionel. They should be able to provide them, since it is a newer engine. You may also be able to get "blind" drive wheels from them that match the ones you have. There are exploded diagrams for most newer production items on the Lionel site; since the smaller 4-4-2s and 2-6-4s are all virtually identical to each other, it shouldn't be necessary to find your exact engine to order parts. Due warning: the parts section of Lionel.com is a royal pain in the caboose to use!
