Lionel 2337 Problems?
Posted by MickeyDemian on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 11:15 PM

I just purchased a Lionel 2337 that I place on a track and it will occasionally bind up and growl almost like gears in the drive truck are binding.  As a newbie to fixing these engines I was wondering which gears should I look at that would most likely cause this problem.   It starts real smooth and runs fine, then for a short distance of a foot or two it will slow down and eminate sounds like binding gears.  Do shafts wear on these units or should I loook for worn gear teeth?   Thanks for any input.  Yes , I have lubricated it before running it.

Mickey,

Exactly what did you lube?  Did you disassemble the motor and truck to lube it?  Go to http://cgi.ebay.com/LIONEL-POST-WAR-2337-GP7-WABASH-C-7-EX-PLUS-HORN-WORKS-/120644484430?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item1c16f8bd4e#ht_9996wt_905  to see pictures of a disassembled unit.

If the engine has been run a lot without proper lubrication, the armature bearings can become worn and allow the armature to rub on the field.  This will give symptoms like you describe.
