Well I sucked it up and got a postwar dual motor and chassis assembly on Ebay...it will satisfy pretty much all my hard-to-get parts needs and give me a couple things to sell off to recoup.

Thanks all!

Mr S,

Well I understand what Timboy is saying about mixing in the LTI motor.  I just did a eBay search, where there are usually a couple of AF diesel motors listed.  None today, but below is a link to an LTI diesel motor.

Good luck,

Mr. S.

Well, I looked on the Portlines site and I couldn't find any diesel motors.  However, you might try calling them.  Here is their number for inquiries:  978-465-8798.

Here is what I would do, for what it's worth.  If the motor can be installed, then I would install it and see if it looks like a good enough fit.  Then I would apply power to it and either it will run or it won''t or it will, but not very well.  At any rate, brief power applied to it won't hurt it, if it isn't already fried.  So, if it worked and worked well, I would let it go at that and call it a job.  And yes, a larger motor would have more pulling power.

If you really must have a different motor for it, then I'm afraid the only thing I can recommend is either a junk diesel with an otherwise good motor.  I would refrain from buying one on eBay because - no matter what the seller might say - the condition of the motor is an unknown.

Fred Jester goes to a lot of train shows in the NE.  He has diesel motors.  He also has Lionel replacements, which I would not do on general principles.  He is also known as The Gilbert Guru on eBay.  If you can find him, you can contact him and talk to him.

Hope all this helps you!

Regards,

Timboy

Flyer 370 motor/truck mismatch
Posted by Mr. S. on Thursday, November 25, 2010 9:29 AM

Hi and Happy Thanksgiving!

I got a Flyer "GP-7 in a bag" and was ready to reassemble it when I noticed the motor field was too big for the motor truck (see picture below)...I think that is the problem.  The field is the slightly bigger type I've seen on the PA's.  The armature looks to be a match for this bigger field as well.  Question:

What would be a good source to buy a PA truck for this field and armature?  I guess I'll do that and pop it in the 371 as I assume a little bigger armature and field would have a little more pulling power.  Or am I wrong?

I want to make sure I am correct on my assumption this motor/field and truck do not go together.

Thanks!
