American Flyer repro stickers/decals
Posted by Mr. S. on Monday, November 22, 2010 6:55 PM

I recently purchased some repro stickers and decals for a couple postwar Flyer projects I have going.

I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the reproduction sticker I received for the 566 whistling billboard...the diesel/steam picture.  Looks like an inkjet image, and none too crisp really, maybe the color is a little too deep if you know what I mean.

Anybody else have the same impressions?  Any good sources for a such a repro sticker, or do they all look the same, just people selling inkjet repros?

The jury is still out on the repro decals (from the same vendor) I also purchased for my GP-7 370 and 371 repaints.  Hate to get the decals and stickers wrong, since there won't be any re-dos; not enjoying the repaints like I used to Smile, Wink & Grin

Thanks in advance!

I bought this one from Doug at Portlines and it was OK

It was not crisp either.  I know RFGO has them also.

Hey Mr. S,

I'll bet that I know who that vendor was.  I purchased "stickers" for my #355 Baldwin diesel, the C&NW.

Poor image quality, no precut outline so I had to trim it myself with an Exacto knife.  It was essentially an inkjet counterfeit on white sticker paper.  No way could I trim a clean circle.  In disgust, I took it off and replaced it with Micro Scale decals.

This is one area I like to see what I am buying first. There are alot of poor repro stickers, decals and other graphics that are not worth the money.  I have been dissapointed with some of the signs for the AF mini craft buildings I have ordered.  I do not buy any of these sight unseen anymore.  Even when I buy them in person I have to be careful and select only quality items from the ones on display.  Of course this means I am going to wait 6 months between the TCA train shows at York to get what I want.

Good point by you, Major.  I am increasingly of that mind set as well.  I can wait the 6 months.

Been there too, know who you mean.  I bought a replacement stripes and sheild sticker from them for a 4B.  I'd have been better off with the remnants of the old decal since the so called "reproduction" looks like..well, you know.  It was definately home-made and I could see the "Office Max" logo on the backing.  I could have done just as well searching for a clean jpeg on the net of that AF logo and making it myself.

But, the best post-war parts dealer in town is gone (Warren's) so getting parts at shows around here isn't as easy as it used to be.  Olsen's didn't have it so I went with what I thought was a good source.  That vendor we're not naming, their plastic and metal parts are good but their paper repros are not.  Won't make that mistake again.

So the question remains...can we name someone who IS a good source for repro stickers/decals?  I'm at a loss for where to look, I haven't seen them at local shows but I am going to one this Saturday.  I don't (can't) go to York.

Becky, you and I must live in the same neck of the woods.

I worked for Warren's for a short time maybe 12-13 years ago.  A great education in toy train parts, really.  Ron Warren cracked me up.

I just bought some decals from these guys and the decals that I got were decent quality.

I couldn't find some other decals so I made my own.
