lionelsoni- I have all of your posts on that subject and will be doing that, I just couldn't deternime if that would help make the turnouts non-derailing. This needs to be as kid proof as possible. Thanks to you also!
Unless your turnouts have switches to shut off the solenoid after throwing, it is a good idea to power them from the track, not from an accessory supply. The problem is that, if a train stops for any length of time on the control rail, you will probably burn out a solenoid. Powering from track voltage is not foolproof, since a train could stop in neutral with the voltage on, but that is less likely.
You can make the turnouts completely safe by powering them with a capacitive-discharge circuit. This is as simple as a DC supply feeding a 5-millifarad capacitor through a number 53 lamp.

Is it possible to convert switches not originally non-derailing to non-derailing? I have a number of Sakai and Marx wide radius switches all with steel pins, which to me would mean they are not non-derailing. Is it as simple as swapping out the two steel pins for fiber ones or would it require some rewiring?
If I'm reading my wiring correctly, the Sakai switches seem to be powered separatly from the track, like the Marx switches.
