Well, I tried to figure out the Pendulum unit.  Seems like the relay or something might be bad.  When I push the direction button on my 167 Whistle/direction controller, the loco stops briefly when the button is down, when the button comes back up the loco remains going forward.  No direction changes at all.  Any ideas??  I was able to find out how to oil and lube the loco.  No problems there.  Just got to get that reversing unit to work right.  Thanks.

New Update...I figured out the headlight problem.  I put in a small screw to attach the headlight to the body or shell, and now the light works great!!  So, that leaves just the Pendulum reversing unit problem.  And, I have to find out the right way to oil and lube this 402E.  There are 2 levers underneath the loco, by the Pendulum reversing unit.  I figured out what the small lever does, it puts the loco in forward or reverse, and if you leave it in the middle the loco is in neutral.  But, the long lever, I am not sure what it does.  I am pretty sure that is the lever that locks the Pendulum Unit into one position, such as forward.  Sound correct?  Looks like only a small list of parts I need tomorrow at the the show.  Thanks.

Okay, I got it on the track.  It runs perfect in forward and reverse.  But, I have to switch directions manually from underneath the loco on the pendulum unit.  Seems like the pendulum unit is sticking.  Any ideas on how to fix this?  The forward headlight works great, but the reverse headlight does not light up.  I tried switching bulbs, a brand new one.  Still will not light up.  I checked the wiring inside and I have 4 terminals or binding posts to attach wires to.  And the forward and reverse wires from the cast headlights are hard wired together.  I think, so both light up when going either direction.  But, the reverse cast headlight is loose and missing the mounting screw.  I think that is why it is not working, not grounded.  What kind of screw do I use to mount the cast headlight to the body or shell?  Other than those things, it works great!!  Just have to oil and lube the motors, anyone know the right way to do that?  I got it all dusted off and the paint looks better now.  Boy, this loco is huge!!  I have it pulling my coal train with a caboose at the end on the layout now!  Going to train show tomorrow, so maybe I will look for some parts for the 402E.  Looks as if I need a cast headlight kit or originals if they have them, and maybe a Pendulum unit.  Unless someone on here knows how to fix a sticking Pendulum unit.  Thats all the updates I have for now.  Will keep you posted if I get those parts tomorrow.  Thanks.

Well, I will be putting the 402E on the track on Friday afternoon after I find some headlight bulbs.  I am looking for some 432C 18 Volt clear bulbs.  I hope I have some extras.  I hope this 402E runs with no problems.  I will give you guys an update on Friday night.  What is the proper way to clean the dirt and dust off a locomotive such as my 402E??  Do I use just a soft cloth that is wet or how?  Just do not want to damage the paint or black on the frame.  The mojave color looks nice, but can clean up nice I am sure.  Should I oil and lube the motor and gears before operation??  If so, how do I do that?  Thanks and any help will do.

I was just worried the couplers will not line up as far as height, to meet the height of the 402E.  I have seen photos of the 402E with the same arrangement of roof ordiments as mine.  But, I have also seen photos of them the way you described.  I am still looking for the wiring diagram for this 402E, no luck yet.  Thanks for the help.

Photos in both the TCA Lionel book and the Lionel 1929 Catalog show: Headlight , Whistle, Bell ---- Pantograph, Whistle, Headlight.    Pictures show the locomotive running both pantograph forward and bell forward.

I'm not into Standard Gauge, But, the 500 cars are 3/4 of an inch lower and 1 inch shorter than a 200 series.  Might look small next to such a large locomotive, but real trains run cars of different sizes.

I sent an email to Lionel and they do not have information on "Older Locomotives."  So, I guess I am stuck in a bind here on how to wire up a 402E the right way.  By right way, I mean so that it has directional lighting.  I guess I will have to search around some more.  I have seen a prewar repair manual, but its like $145.00 on Amazon.com and thats way too much to spend for a book that is 30 years old.  Well, I will start on the work on my 402E next week.  Maybe on Monday or Tuesday when I have time.

Standard Gauge 402E!!
Posted by lionel2 on Sunday, November 7, 2010 7:55 PM

Hello,  I sold my 402 with rubber stamped E on door and picked up a 402E.  Have a few questions about the 402E.  Mine is in very good condition and all original, except the wheel, which are new.  Anyone have a wiring diagram for the 402E??  Inside the body, I have 4 terminals to attach wires.  The 402E has 2 motors and a Pendulum E-Unit.  Also, what is the correct arrangement of the ordiments on the roof??  Is it---light bell whistle====whistle pantograph light??  Or is it arranged another way or does it really matter that much??  I am a collector/operator.  And, does the 402E latch with 500 series cars or must they be 200 series cars?  Thanks and any help will do.
