trouble with proto sound 2 tender
Posted by KEVINK22 on Thursday, November 4, 2010 12:25 PM

Hi All,

I have a MTH Milwaulkie Road Hiawatha proto sound 2 tender that goes with the 4-6-2 Pacific that i have. I recently had to charge the proto sound battery. I noticed that there was no sound coming from the tender once it was on the track and the transformer was humming, and then the circuit breaker popped. So i took the engine and tender off the track, and put a different one on and it ran immediately.  I rolled the tender by itself  along the track and sparks started to come from the pick up roller underneath.

So question is has anyone experienced this before with any MTH proto sound 2 tenders before, and if so what would the solution be for me at this point. Anyones help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Any time we remove the shell off a chasis, we run the risk of having a bare wire touch the frame.  Remove the tender, and set the frame on the track, pulling the wrirng away from the anything metal, to see if you have a short.  Pop a regular 9vlt battery on to see if the Nicad has gone bad.  Check the pickup rollers for any irregularities.

What kind of track you using?

Check for broken or shorted wires on the wires to the battery cap.  I have had that.

Fifedog,

Thanks for the reply. I am using Lionel Fastrack. I have run this engine on this track before and have never had this type of problem before. So i am a bit on the lost side. It isn't possible to over charge the proto sound battery is it? I mean i know that you don't have to have the battery charger to charge this battery; but i always do. Thanks for your help and suggestions.

I think we've isolated your problem to the tender.  Double check the wheel sets (if you accidentally altered them somehow), but try the 9vlt and get back to us.
