Do not apply voltage directly to the brushes. You can easily burn it out that way. The brushes (armature) and the field winding must be wired in series.

Well, I turned the pickup shoe around. Still nothing. I tried to use a small transformer and hook up leads to the brushes. Nothing. Have I tried everything? That just bugs me that the light works, but nothing else does. Humm. Anymore help will do. Thanks.
Well, I replaced the brushes. But, still nothing. Any idea why it is not working? Does it matter which way you put on the pickup shoe? I think I might have put it on the wrong way, might have to turn it around 180 degrees. This is a tough little loco to work on.
I was able to find a diagram from Olsen's toy trains. It is wired up the same way as in the diagram. Maybe the brushes need replaced, as I have not done that yet. Looks like the loco is getting power just fine, cause the light does light up bright. But, the loco will not turn over or move. You think maybe the coil wire is messed up?? I will play with it some more and see if I can narrow down the problem.
I've read in the past in both CTT mag and on here I think that there was no real wiring diagram and it can vary from engine to engine back then as some had different parts( e-units) than others.
Now my 8E I haven't even looked at in about 2 years so guess I need to get it out. and I don't have any other prewar anymore got rid of all them about 4 years ago other than the Standard gauge set which is pack away. Off Monday might be able to dig it out if you still need help and take a pic or two and post them for you to much to do tonight or next 2 days as I work the next 2 days also.

Well, I replaced all the wiring. But, now the #33 will not run. I got the light bulb to light up. But, the loco will not run. I am pretty sure I got the wiring right. Anyone know which wires go where on reversing unit? I have the Light and pickup on one stud or screw on the top. Then, I have the bottom brush or the brush that is closest to the bottom of the loco on one screw. Then, below that screw I have the coil wire on that screw. Then, the last remaining screw I have the top brush. I might have screwed up the wiring. But, at least I got the light to work and the pickup wired right. Any help will do. Is there a diagram on how the reversing unit wires up?? Thanks.
Not familiar with a 33 but if wiring is old and brittle I would replace it. Might be part of your problem but doubt it. But replacing wire can be a smart thing to do as could cause other problems if it would break and short somewhere.
How do you replace the brushes for a #33 electric loco?? Do I have to take off the body? The wiring is old and brittle. Should I replace the wiring?? Thanks.
I have a dead 33 and this brings up an interresting question.
On mine I can't even tell whether the brushes are an issue since I can't get more than a twinge of motion out of it. I've heard that early 33 type motors are "unfixable" especially if they have continuity issues. I suspect the armature needs rewinding but I don't know how to do that. Does anyone make a good armature for the 33 or have the expertise to fix one of these?

Trains, trains, wonderful trains. The more you get, the more you toot!
Dirty brushes or a burnt coil. Try the brushes if that doesnt work its time for a trip to Bob Hannon.
I have a black #33 that is running slower than normal. I think the brushes might be bad. Any ideas why it is running slow? I have to have my Z transformer on full throttle on a small loop to get it going. Any help will do. Thanks
