Industrial Rail Caboose?
Posted by Southwest Chief on Saturday, October 23, 2010 5:56 PM

Kind of on an O scale kick this weekend.

I remember seeing at at train show a Santa Fe painted Industrial Rail Caboose in O-27 scale.

It was painted red with a black roof and large yellow circle and cross logo.  Basically a good rendition of the late 1960s to late 1970s appearance...I mostly remember these in the 1980s with red roofs.

Looked very much like this:

I didn't buy it when I saw it since the paint scheme was too modern for my layout.  And always hoped they'd issue an earlier mineral brown version.

Now years later I've been thinking about repainting it since the body style was the closest to a typical Santa Fe caboose in O-27 I've ever seen.  But I don't know the item number so searching for one has been tough.  And I'd like to see it again to jog my memory if the body shape really is as good as I think it is.

So does anyone know the item number of the Industrial Rail caboose I'm thinking of?  Any photos?  Any idea what these might be going for now?

This is a picture from the atlas website of an industrial rail atsf caboose which I bought  in 2007.

I don't see any yellow coloring on the logo, and the shape is not like the one you pictured. To match that shape, you need a Lionel 6457 caboose, but that will say "Lionel", not Santa Fe..

Thanks for the info.

I've found this one online too.  Apparently a "C&O" caboose style, released by Atlas O after they took over Industrial Rail.

I'm not sure how old the Industrial Rail caboose I'm thinking about is.  Could be close to 10 years old.  Well before Atlas O took over.

I remember the box being Industrial Rail and saying O-27 and even being labeled (factory) for the specific Santa Fe caboose.  So it wasn't a weird dealer box swap I saw.

The Lionel 6457 is a classic.  I have a few.  That is based on an SP caboose...well loosely based on an SP caboose.  I even have one lettered for Santa Fe.  But it is lacking for Santa Fe prototype looks.  That's why I'm trying to find the Industrial Rail model to repaint.

Thanks for the link Bob.

That actually is exactly the body style I'm looking for.  Pre-1960s rebuild Santa Fe caboose.

But being a brass model that is going to be true O scale.  Probably wouldn't fit in too well with our Plasticville O-27 layout Wink

Here's a link to a photo page of our O scale layout:

O scale layout photo page

It looks like MTH has a new caboose coming out this December.

It is Rail King, but the dimensions given seem a little large to be in a train of Lionel 6464 sized boxcars. So likely O scale versus O-27. But the paint is almost exactly what I'm looking for (white ladders are a bit strange).

Here's what it looks like:

And a link to it: MTH Caboose

My interest in a more accurate looking caboose for our O scale layout is thanks in part to the excellent Intermountain HO scale Santa Fe cabeese. I have two of them on our Ho layout. They are just great:

I found it.

Here's what the side of the box looks like:

Be advised that it was actually closer to S scale, though it had O gauge trucks. We ran a pic in the Sept 2000 product news and they were next to the still cataloged work caboose and it was much smaller than that car.

Thanks for the info on it being close to S scale.

Unfortunately I have a feeling this S scaleish (is that a word Tongue Tied ) caboose might be the only thing close enough for an O-27 layout when compared with the larger offerings out there.

A search of ebay found a coupel of options I pasted below.  Take a look at teh second link, needs some trucks but you get some people too!

SW Chief, I'll echo Bob's warning. A friend of mine actually had one of the UMD Industrial Rail cabooses and they are SMALL even by 027 standards. They make a Lionel SP style caboose (as posted above in the eBay links) seem big. This caboose is the ONE clinker in the otherwise excellent UMD line up of Industrial Rail cars.

The newer Atlas caboose is much better proportionally for traditionally sized trains.

The Railking caboose you mentioned is not scale, but closer to it than most other semi-scale trains. Yes, it is a tad large, but in my opinion, will not look too out of place on your layout with 6464 kinds of cars. Lionel currently has one of their SP cabooses from a set in a very similar paint scheme only with a blue body... I think it's very attractive but I'm not really a Santa Fe modeler.

Thanks for the info.

Since I plan to repaint any caboose I get, the colors it comes with isn't really an issue.  I'm just trying to find the best body out there that looks like a Santa Fe caboose, but also is O-27, or small for O scale.

Our current caboose is a Lionel 16568:

Nice caboose and the basic Lionel SP type.  It even has interior lighting.  If it were mineral brown instead of red I might just keep using it.  But it would be nice to have something more accurate to replace this one...if it exists.
