K-Line Classic Stock Car size?
Posted by Southwest Chief on Saturday, October 23, 2010 1:11 AM

I'm wondering if the K-Line classic stock car is roughly the same size as a Lionel 6464 boxcar?

I have several of the old K-Line Santa Fe reefers which are essentially 6464 boxcars with Santa Fe reefer graphics.  They match a Lionel 6464 almost exactly.  Looks like this:

I'd like to get a K-Line stock car and I'm hoping their "Classic" stock car is the same size as their reefers (like the one pictured above).

From what I can tell they are very similar.  The ends appear to be the same, as do the roof and trucks.

Here's a pic of the type of K-Line stock car I'm wondering about:

So are the K-Line stock cars the same size as a Lionel 6464?

Does anyone have a photo of what the K-Line 463-1051 Classic Santa Fe stock car looks like?

They appear to be the same size, 40 footer.  Look at the rooflines; the same mold.

SW Chief, I have the cars you photographed, and yes they are approximately the same... but not exact. I forget which is longer, but if you take the frame from a Lionel 6464 type box car and try to use it on a K-Line type as pictured, you'll find there is about 1/8 inch difference in the frame/body length.

I don't recall K-Line making the above stock car in Santa Fe. And the number you gave with the 463- suffix is not a correct K-Line number. The "traditionally" sized cars start with a "6" and the newer more scale proportioned cars start with a 3 digit number beginning with a "7". If you check the following link, there is a 763-1051 stock car which is larger than the cars above, but not too out of place. They are taller, longer and wider than a 6464. I have the EL box car in the picture and I think of it as a modern high cube when running with smaller 6464 and 027 kinds of cars.

And here's another link for the whole ATSF listings from the K-Line Legacy web site. This site does not cover the entire MDK K-Line production, but mostly from the year 1999 onward.

Also for your info, the original Industrial Rail by UMD made a stock car which is right on the mark for running with traditionally sized trains. There was no Santa Fe one, but the cars are nice and have a molded wood-grain effect that the others do not have. I don't believe Atlas has reintroduced the IR stock car as of yet.

Thanks for the info.

The "scale" K-Line Santa Fe stockcar has always been a favorite of mine.  The lettering is pretty accurate, although the red color is not.  But still it is a lot better then many O scale Santa Fe stockcars that is until Atlas O's awesome model came out.  However since our layout only has 6464 style boxcars and reefers I never thought it would the large K-Line stockcar would look right, especially on our 1950s era layout which is before the time of Hi-Cubes.

I have seen the Industrial Rail stock car.  Looks surprisingly similar to the K-Line classic model.  They both have the same placement of number and herald placards.

When I first saw the Industrial Rail stockcar, I initially thought it was the same as the K-Line classic.  Except the Industrial Rail stockcar has stirrup steps and lacks a bottom early 6464 style door bar.  Also I'm not too keen on the Industrial rail exposed bearing trucks.  Our layout is in the covered journal era.
