What do you want in Lionel's Conventional Classics series?
Posted by Roger Carp on Saturday, October 9, 2010 1:04 PM

I think Lionel's Conventional Classics series--moderately priced reissues of classic middle-of-the-road postwar O and O-27 sets--is one of the best things to be going on in the toy train hobby now. So which postwar cataloged sets should Lionel add to the series next? In this month's CTT Web Exclusive (for subscribers), I suggest three possible additions to the series. What do you think? Please share your thoughts here or send an email to rcarp@ClassicToyTrains.com or send a letter or card to: Roger Carp, Classic Toy Trains, 21027 Crossroads Cir., Waukesha, WI 53187-1612. We'll publish the best responses in a feature article next year.

I would like to see the set that had ( by the way this was my first set) 2359 B&M GP-9, Satalite car ( green) , Security car , it had a blue flat car with it, and 6544 USMC Missle firing car but like most mine had the brake wheels broke off.

Rodger,

For the non subscriber members of the forum would you mind sharing your three picks?

Nothing is more fairly distributed than common sense: no one thinks he needs more of it than he already has.

I like the idea of the series, and already have purchased the Lackawanna FM Trainmaster set, the New York Central F3 freight, the 646 Hudson steam freight set and the 2056 Hudson passenger set.  I like all of them and the neat freight cars.  Am undecided on any of the others, but I am looking closely at the Girls train set.

Having said that, I have no background on the original postwar sets. I'm just happy that they can come up with some interesting and colorful trains.

I was looking forward to any set that had the no. 208 Santa Fe Alco A-A.  I agree that this color combination is one of the best.  Unfortunately by the time the catalogue came out with the 208 shown faded out on page 58 with the caption "offered through the LCCA", it was sold out there.  Maybe Lionel will offer the 208 with the 1605W freight set that included the 6800 airpane car, the 6801 boat car, and the 6802 US Steel girder car.

I agree with Papa D.  A re-issue of the #208 Alco would be nice.

Good evening all,

My preference would the the Alaskan set from 1959 along with the separate sale Alaska cars that did not come with the set.  Since they came out with a Scout type set this year, it would not be a great stretch to remake the original Scout set with the original three cars as well (albeit with operating knuckle couplers).

Keep on training,

In the Lionel 1960 catalog is the Great Northern EP-5 Electric freight train. The consist included the flatcars with the Harnischfeher power shovel and crane. Also two operating cars, fireman / ladder firfighting car and the track maintenance car. The set also included a graduated trestle set and Super O for a large layout. Since I am partial to the Great Northern I would be interested in this set.
