LTI American Flyer 6-48047
Posted by aflyer on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 6:45 PM

Hi guys,

I am thinking about adding a Lionel AF 4-8-4 to my almost completely 50's technology AF collection.  As some will note from a previous post I have aquired an EP5 from LTI which I like and it runs very well.

So now I am considering a 4-8-4 with Railsounds.  Hey, why not enter the current century with the Railsounds technology.  So my qustion is with a converntional transformer setup how to you use or control the railsounds in one of these new locomotives?.

Thanks in advance for all responses,

George

I have one of the new 4-8-4s.  And they are a sweet locomotive.  The railsound will come on automatically when the engine is in neutral after about 30 seconds.  You also trigger the rail sounds by blowing a short toot on the whistle. I have found that any modern transformer with bell and whistle control will activate the features or if you have an original Flyer Transformer and an OTT controller for American Models locomotives, that it too will activate the features.  Lionel also sells separate push buttons for bell and whistle control for transformers lacking those features.

The amount of rail sounds is not as extensive as the TMMC equiped Mikado or Pacific but still very satisfactory!

Major,

Thank you for the response.  I missed a 48047 on ebay last night that sold for $286.00.  Really kicking myself now for not bidding on it.  I will keep looking and shop some of the discount dealers.  I am using an AF 18B transformer but am puchasing a Lionel 5906 sound button for my EP5, so maybe that will work as you described in the absence of a ZW or similar Lionel transformer.

Thanks again,

George
