I have an MTH G5 from I think 2001. its been working like a charm since I got it in early september, but as of yesterday, the sound stops randomly for a few seconds and then starts up again. not always in the same spot on the layout. does anyone know what could be wrong? I was thinking the connection between the engine and tender.

The internal battery may be the problem. When the unit goes over a switch or loses contact momentarily the battery is suppose to smooth that out. But if the engine is from 2001 or so, the batter may just need to be replaced. Probably not taking or holding a charge. (Happened to me, on 2 different engines)

Thanks for the reply, Does it need a special battery? if so wehre can I get one. im new to this protosounds stuff.
Radio Shack 8.4 nimh (looks like 9 volt). Last time I bought one they were a shiney metallic green. Also, be suspect of the speaker. Both are easy fixes.
While the battery might be at fault, do you have a lighted passenger car or caboose with the train you are running? I had a lighted caboose that shorted out and gave me real problems, I couldn't figuire this out until I took the caboose off and ran the engine without the lighted caboose. Try running the engine by itself first and see what happens!
Another thing, the PS-2 battery looks more like a portable phone battery pack for a 3.2 volt rechargeable than it does a 9 volt battery from the PS-2 engines that I have had the shell taken off of.
