A new computer every 6 months?  I've never bought a new computer; and the most I've ever paid for one is $100.  But then the last time I bought a new automobile was 1971.

LOL.

Bob, you are a real hoot.

The real question is: Would you want Timboy's face on Facebook?   Laugh

Also, if you haven't taken the proper steps to protect your computer, then you by bippy better not 'surf' the web.

Lionroar88:  That's what I refer to as "running naked through cyberspace".  LOL  I totally agree.  If you'll let me on YOUR computer, I'll go anywhere and do anything, with or without protection; but not on mine! LOL

If you received an email from someone who you work with and they CCed someone else and you 'reply to all' then the CCed email addresses are added to your contact list... somehow, some way, your email client has them as a contact somewhere. Facebook does not 'drill down' through email addresses because it requires the password for the account to gain access.

It has been a while since I've used the 'search contacts' feature, but I think there is also somewhere you can add your current and previous employers, if someone adds that employer to their profile it finds them that way as well.

Trust me... Facebook <> Big Brother. There has been so much misinformation printed about online communities it is just mind blowing. The best advice I can give someone one is 'If you are not comfortable with a technology, then do not use it' it is when you do things, or visit sites you aren't familiar with, that gets you in trouble. Also, if you haven't taken the proper steps to protect your computer, then you by bippy better not 'surf' the web. Go only to reputable sites... there are lots of ways to be online safely.

Azfler:   That's a good point by you!  ALL new things have their idiosyncrasies and shortcomings; IOW's - bugs.  We work through them.  Remember when we "had" to buy a new computer every 6 months?  I haven't bought one for 3 years now.  We get it right - in time.  Some of us give more weight to the shortcomings than the upside.  That's human nature.  Glass: half full/half empty.  I don't want to be one of those who see it as half empty.  So, I embrace new things - like Facebook for Flyer trains - with all do respect and caution.  Hey!  At one time, THIS forvm was, like totally out there, Dude.  I even re-invent myself from time-to-time just to change things up a little.  But I also don't go running naked through cyber-space.  Well, maybe sometimes, just for fun.  LOL

Anyhoo, the purpose of this forum is to communicate and that is constantly evolving.  How many guys on this forvm have a blog to show off what they are doing?  Oh!  I do, said the duck.  LOL

I came across this site on a search for Facebook pros and cons : http://www.edhat.com/site/tidbit.cfm?nid=36810

I think it says it at it very best. Its what you make out of it. Just like the model train forums. There is some forums you spend a lot more time on than others. You enjoy what you do, that is what counts.

Keep your model trains on the track. Take a lot of pictures an videos to share with your friends.

Have a good evening, AZ-Flyer:  http://www.az-flyer.blogspot.com/

lionroar88.

I have not used my work E-mail account for any personal correspondence outside of work.  2 of the individuals that came up in facebook, I had never communicated with electronically.  It does make sense though; if the other two guys had communicated with the ones that I had E-mailed.

We are all 'Fishes in an aquarium".

When I went fishing I only kept the big fish. I through the little fishes back......

I hope were all small fishes,  and big brother is only looking for bigger fish.

Keep the pot stirring, and your model trains on the track,

Facebook and other similar sites are a very good example of, You cannot fix stupid.

Some clueless here even type their complete email address in a message not realizing someone who is a member here can just click on their name to email them. That shows up in Google searches as I have seen them before. Then, they get an email about someone who wants to share some money with them or has an offer they cannot refuse.

Ignorance is not bliss.

DJSpanky

The great thing about social networks like Facebook, is that anything you post on there will show up in certain situations, oh, say, like job interviews.

Only if you are a complete and utter moron and leave your profile completely open for everyone to see.

DJSpanky:  Very true, but that can be used to a person's advantage as well.  I got a cool summer job this past year from a Facebook lead!  If I hadn't been on it, I wouldn't have known about it.  It's all how you care to look at it.  LOL

Hi Jaun:  I wouldn't blame a company for being upset with an employee for the employee using company time and other resources to do personal things online or otherwise.  I think it's wasteful and unproductive and a total misuse of company assets.  I think it's so interesting that lots of auctions on eBay are geared for ending during work hours and lots of guys are posting notes on various forums during working hours.  I'm retired, so it's easy for me to say.  But when I worked, I didn't do it for two reasons; 1) the company didn't allow it and B) I didn't want to risk the company acting as Big Brother and knowing my business.  That's how I feel about it.  I sleep well.

Hey Timboy.

Technology is a great thing - as long as its not intrusive or invasive,  Let me give you my thoughts.....

I bought a cell phone recently. One of the connections for the phone was thru Facebook.  I decided to give it a shot, just out of curiosity.  When I logged on, it came up with the names of several people that I work with.  I never told them WHERE or WHOM I work for.  What are the odds, out of 270 million people in this country?  It blew my mind out of this planet!

Do you believe that BIG BROTHER is watching you? - Its a fact - they are.  Do you believe that companies are building huge data bases about everything that we do in our daily lives - to be used for phycological profiling? They are.

Facebook is just one of the Carrots that they are using to entice all of us.   There are thousands of them out there.  We are all 'Fishes in an aquarium".  They believe, that their world does not have any boudries - but their keppers know better,

If reality is what you make it, then let me stay in Train Room.

Have a great day.....

Juan Cool

I helps to understand technology BEFORE you use it.

Facebook looks at your contacts by email address. So if you corresponded with those coworkers via their work email address that is how Facebook found them. And if your company finds out they used their corporate email addresses for Facebook and are recieving Facebook content at work they may be a little more than upset.

azflyer:   I always have a lot of respect for older people who are more "with it" with new technology than much younger people.  So, when I DO run into an older guy who is stick in the 50's or 60's or whatever, I know where they came from; the not-too-with-it youth of today.  I was the first guy in my family, workforce and friends that I knew of at the time who embraced mp3 technology.  I sold off all my CD's and put all my music on my hard-drive in compressed format.  Then I pushed it out to my surround sound system via WinAmp as the jukebox.  That's pretty much common knowledge these days, but it wasn't so much when I did it.  Now-a-days, I stream my favorite sport team's local announcers, push it out to my surround sound and sync it to the video from ESPN or wherever.  Sooooooo cool.  Okay, this ranting doesn't have anything specifically to do with trains, but it goes to the concept of acceptance of your Facebook concept - for our train hobby.  I embraced DCC at one time and converted my whole Flyer fleet to it.  Worked fantastic.  Still love DCC, but I decided - for nostalgic reasons - to build a vintage-era layout this time.  Some time in the future, I may convert my fleet to DCC again.  Well, to each our own.

Anyhoo; props to you,

Timboy

Social Networking was about writing letters when I was  young. Then came the  computers with snail mail. Now the young and some older people love Face-Book, because they all live long distances from there families. Maybe I should write letters to all my friends and family. I have been promising a few people in particular actual written letters for a while. It’s something I really miss doing! Maybe I’ll get round to it soon. That reminds me, a use to collect United States mint stamps. I could use those stamps for mailing my letters! Then I would have to mail all those pictures of my train layout in a larger envelope....so much for that idea! To late for a cup of coffee, after all this I think, a beer will do. Good night, Az_Flyer

I agree with you I joined once and the emails were more than I could handle friends of friends of freinds wanting you to friend them sorry not for me.

I don't mind the gathering I have here from the forum that I have email address of to share some jokes or ask help on problems or give advice in some cases.

I don't need face book and all the unwanted emails because some friend of a friend doesn't know how to delete all previously email address befor they send it on to others who send it to who ever and then you start getting all these please come visit my site emails

Don't be one of those who are hopelessly stuck in the past by fearing modern technology when it serves us for swapping information - such as this or BLOGS.  I'll wager that we all like our morning muffin or coffee warmed up in our microwaves that we rejected back "in the day"!  LOL  Hey!  I used the magic word, "LOL".  "LOL" is a magic word that makes everything alright!  LOL

Regards,

Timboy

Its not any Luddite mindset that has kept me off places like Facetube or is that Myface. Its the privacy issues.... to me its still just a little too wild west on the personal info on the Facebook issue. Until I read that they have gotten that sorted out I will stay off.

BTW I highly highly recommend the movie about Facebooks creator, "The Social Network" its a terrificly interesting movie.

   Have fun with your trains
