I think you've hit on the answer - wiring the lights to the motor brush plate. If you wire one bulb to one side of the brush plate, it will glow when the engine is going in that direction. Conversely, the other bulb should be wired to the other side of the brush plate, so it will only light when the train travels in the opposite direction.

the 380E is completly different from the 10E and 318 in that the 380E has the wires for the lights wired directly to what looks like a brushplate of some kind.  There is a little lever on this brushplate that is used to change the direction of the 380E.  My 10E and 318 do not have this.  The 10E has a pendulum reversing unit and the 318 has a manual lever used to change the direction.  I wish there were books on how these trains were wired up originally.

If your 380E directional lighting works correctly, you could use it as a guide to check the wiring of your other two locomotives.

10E and 318 Standard Gauge Electric Locomotives Question
Posted by lionel2 on Friday, October 1, 2010 4:45 PM

I have both a 10E and 318 Standard Gauge locomotives.  But, the directional lighting is not operating correctly.  I know the lights are supposed to be in front when moving forward, but for example, on my 10E both the back and front lights are lighted when moving in forward direction.  How do I rewire the lights the original way they were supposed to be?  The 318 is the same way.  My 380E works great with the directional lighting and would like my other 2 electrics to be this way.  Hope someone might know, these are very old trains, from the 20's or 30's I believe.  I am good with my hands at fixing trains and have done repairs before and just found out that the electrics are supposed to have directional lighting.  Thanks and any info will help.
