Milk Car Return Spring

My biggest problem with the milk car was the retaining stud for the door's opening and closing activation mechanism's rod.

The surrounding area of the door's hole, where the stud was attached, was cracked and the stress put on the stud when the door opened and closed caused the stud to keep coming out.

I had to use a compatible metal/plastic cement, which is holding for now.

In the good ole' days the studs were heat fitted and the plastic of the doors were supple, when first made and they lasted a good sixty-plus years.

That's American ingenuity.

They did not have, or use planed obsolescence back then and gave the buyer good quality.

thanks, Ralph. Unfortunately, those pictures do not indicate the correct position of the longer arm of the spring, so I'm still stuck. But I appreciate your effort.

I'm fixing up a 3462 milk car and I've forgotten where the longer arm of the return spring should be positioned. Does it rest behind the plunger rod assembly, or behind the opening in the sweep arm which that assembly fits into? Does it hook into the plunger rod assembly opening in the sweep arm? I can't seem to find a place where it will stay and operate properly, and none of my diagrams shows this little detail. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.
