Custom made AF WYE
Posted by Hudson322 on Sunday, September 19, 2010 2:27 PM

I just saw on a layout two WYE's that were custom made.  The person who had these thought that AC Gilbert had made them.  Anyone have any ideas who made these, or how I can go about having some made for me?

Hudson322:  Hello.  I've never tried to make a WYE, but I have just completed making a slightly curve-on-curve turnout.  I would think that the principle is the same.  But are you talking about vintage Flyer rails, or solid rails and are you talking Highrail or scale?  At any rate, here is a link to the turnout that I made using vintage rails:

The WYE that I saw looks like they used AF 720 switches.

Well then that's what they did.  Nothing custom made about that.  Do you have a pic?

Sorry, no pic.  I didn't have my camera with me.  I wasn't sure if Gilbert made a WYE switch or any other Turnouts besides their 720 switches.

HI,

The AC Gilbert factory only made 40" diameter switches and 90 degree crossings.  Every now and then a custom-built something or another will turn up on eBay.  Could be that there were some track items made back in the day by some cottage industry.  Guys make their own crossings of various degrees. American Models has a variety of crossings made from solid non-vintage rails, but no wyes.

Here's a link:  http://www.americanmodels.com/misc/track.html

Tom's Turnouts has wyes, but they do not use vintage rails either.
