Absolutely no steel wool. Even if you don't operate loco's with magnetraction there is still the possibility for the threads to be picked up in the speakers or in the drive gears.

Lots of elbow grease using ScotchBrite pads and something like WD-40.

Hi:  Hope you have a very tolerent spouce!  The dishwasher where I live is the coveted property of my better half!  Bought mine a new one after I cleaned up a pair of Chevy small block valve covers!  It worked great! Couldn't use it for dishes anymore,  (Oh I could, but the Mrs was very against it! )  Better have a source of compressed air to blow out the trapped water in the tubes where they are crimped and follow up with a squirt of  some sort of lube oil into each tube . (WD-40 or close to it). Dishwasher won't take off the rust either, but just make it real clean!  It might even destroy the paper  insulation tabs under the outside rails!  I would try just one section that you can stand to toss out first.  (and do it when no one is around for awhile)   Have fun!
