Try a particular yard of the road you intend to model. In my personal experience, here are some good ones: Conway yard (Pittsburgh, PA) still has a roundhouse and operating turntable, and not so long ago had two humps. Oak Island ( Newark, NJ) has an operating turntable also as well as a HUGE hump yard. Camden, NJ has a smaller classification yard and a small engine service area, but it is very industrial with a small car repair shop attatched. For passenger trains you can't beat Sunnyside Yard in New York. It has tunnels, reversing loops, a car wash and two possibilites for an engine house. The old enginehouse on the northside where the GG1's were serviced, or the new engine service area which now handles AEM-7's, HHP-8's and Genisis units, as well as a car repair facility on the side. Good luck with your adventure.

Check out John Armstrong's "Track Planning for Realistic Operation"

He talks about both of those types of yards and lots of other stuff in the book.

Engine Facilities and Classification Yards

I'm looking for information and detailed drawings to help design a medium size steam engine maintenance facility and medium size classification yard. Any suggestions of sources - book, WEB sites, etc,

Will be used in designing a Hi-Rail layout (about 700 square feet) as the main theme for our farm oriented 2 room bed and breakfast. Hpe to run both TMCC and DCS equipment on minimum 72in curves.
