We're planning our fist non-Christmas tree layout, we have enough room for a 12' by 14' -- which we believed to be enough room; However, we had hoped for a second level mainline track which does not seem possible given what we're reading in the published books and guides.
Based upon what we've read, it will take 200+" (16 feet) of straight run track to reach a height of 8" at an incline grade reasonable for our toy trains to climb. That is a couple feet more than we have and in looking at hundreds of images of layout on line it somehow feels like I've missed something since there are lots of layouts with second level lines that appear smaller than 16'.
Please help, any suggestions, recommendations?
First off ---> .
My layout is somewhat U-shaped, with O-42 return loops, in a 9x13 space. I use K-Line tubular track, and my main crosses over/under itself twice during one curcuit.
Switch your desired height to 6" and recalculate.
I agree with fifedog but it also depends what your running as some of the post war steam engines you could get away with 5" or maybe 4" depending on wheather your using O or O-27 track O is higher. If fast track and newer trains I would go with fife's 6" for sure. I plan to do a 8' X 14 pernament layout sooner or later so this is interestinf to think about for me 2 but do remember as a kid we did 4" with O-27 track and our smaller steam engines and smaller stock cars the ones they now call O-27 6014 babt ruth ect.
