That's a 100 watt transformer, more than enough for any single locomotive.

All MTH engines batteries can be charged while sitting on the track. just set the voltage to around 10-12 volts. I have the MTH charger that has outputs for both the 9V & 3V systems, and it works pretty good. If you can buy one, do so. The main reason is that by charging on track, you are powering all the electronics+ the smoke unit(if it has one). the charger just charges the battery. It won't power up the entire engine.

A Day Without Trains is a Day Wasted
Another reason to buy the wall charger unit is that down here(in south Florida when dealing with flickering powerless & lightless[FPL]) the electric goes out for a second or two and that acts just like the direction button being pressed, so your train will take off when that happens. Can you say rocket sled or rear-end collision? In my opion track charging a battery in an MTH engine is not a good idea!
