Old train lionel 736

First off I wanted to say hello . I am new to the forum and have little to no knowledge pertaining to trains at all . With that said I have a train that I was asked to look into . it is an old train of my uncles that my grand parents bought him when he was a young boy. He has passed and my father has it in his possession and he is not doing well either . So My father asked if I could do some research on the train and go from their.

First off you should have posted this under Toy Train Operating and Collecting. That is the best place for help on Post War Lionel. This is what I can tell you about the Engine and Tender. First off it is a very good engine. It was first introduced by lionel in 1950 and it replaced the 726 Berkshire. It has magnatraction and it came with either of these tenders: 2671WX, 2046W or 736W, depending on the year produced. It was produced from 1950 to 1966, except for the years 1952( Korean war, it had no magnatraction and it went back to the 726) and 1958. In my opinion it may have been refinished looking at the numbers and I don't recall a Berkshire with a NYC Tender. I just remember Lionel Lines and Pennsylvania. We just had a conversation about the 736 Berkshire and the 2046 Hudson in the Toy Train Operating and Collecting Forum. Why don't you check it out.

It appears to be a pre-Korean-War locomotive, on the basis of the missing window muntin.  The tender appears to be a 2671WX, which would place it in 1950 or 1951.  However, I agree with John that the tender has been relettered, from "LIONEL LINES".  NYC is not appropriate (not that that would have stopped Lionel), since it is a Pennsylvania type of tender.

Is the color really as brown as it appears on my computer?  If so, that also suggests a repaint.

The lettering (736) is not positioned correctly. The engine was likely refinished.

If you plan to run the engine, it should be lubed before you run it. This requires that the shell be removed. It is quite easy on this engine if you are good with your hands. Bruce Baker

thanks for all the replies. Sorry for posting it in the wrong section I know the picture looks brownish and that is due to taking the photo with my phone with bad lighting . I know my uncle was into his toys planes and trains and boats . He also did a lot of rework on many of them not sure if he repainted it or not but I would not put it past him to do so. it is very clean and doesnt show much wear from what I can see but then again what do I know . As far as the second part of the train I am not sure if that was the correct decals or not but my father did say that it was bought at the same time as the Engine .
