Legacy Cab 2 will not turn on

I had allowed my Legacy system to sit for sometime in the base, unplugged. When I plugged everything in I got an error indication on the base charging lights. I pulled out the batteries and they were dead (0 V). I replaced the batteries with Energizer rechargable batteries. The charging lights on the base go through their normal cycles to solid green. However, the CAB 2 will not turn on. I checked the batteries - they are at 1.4 volts. I tried various combinations of the SET button, the reset and the power button. I also tried to reload the Cab (1.2 module in, hold SET and power).

Any thoughts on why the Cab 2 will not power up?

 are the batteries installed correctly? not trying to be a smart !@#$%  sometimes its the simplist little thing.

 I would suggest trying Alkaline Batteries.  I stopped using the "rechargable" ones because of the constant error message, and was concerned about the heat generated.  I do not like leaving power applied to the layout if I'm not in the vicinity either.  The alkaline batteries are fine, I have only had to replace them 2 or maybe 3 times in the past two years.  If you do decide to go with the alkaline remember to shut the recharger off, (button on the bottom of the Legacy unit.)  Also, I suggest putting a piece of electrical tape over the contacts on the Legacy Base module.

Keep in mind that most non-rechargeable cells, such as alkaline and zinc-carbon, put out 1.5 volts, while rechargeable ones are likely to be rated at 1.2 volts.

Triple checked :) the polarity.  Also tried using Alkaline batteries (which tested new out of the pack at 1.6V).  No luck.  Looks like I will have to call Lionel - unfortunately the unit is over two years old and out of warranty.

Bob, That is something to know about. I did not know that there is a voltage output difference between chargeable and non-chargeable cells. Thank you, Ralph

A quick follow up:

I contacted Lionel about this a few days after the initial post.  I was issued an RMA and I sent the unit off on 7/9.  I received a replacement on 7/27.  The CAB 2 was over two years old - Lionel never asked the age - they just replaced it.  I also received automated emails when the unit was received and when they shipped a replacement.

 I was impressed start to finish with the way it was handled.  I now have my Legacy system back in operation!

Do yourself a huge favor and remove the rechargable batteries, turn the charging feature off on the bottom of the base, and pit regular alkaline batteries in the CAB2. I did this when my stock batteries stopped receiving a charge and have never looked back.
