I recently took my gg-1 to our local authorized service station. It took 5 weeks for them to start. After beig told they did not have access to LioneL parts I had to purchase the part from Lionel.. I guess to be thorized all you need a hammer and screwdriver.I am disappointed with Lionel service !!! I was under the understanding you needed test equipment, tools, and parts. A little exppertise helps
I believe last year Lionel started to overhaul their service centers requiring all service techs to attend classes at Lionel. I am not sure if it was a requirement to attend the classes to remain an authorized service center.

I gotta agree with the others an Authorized dealer has access to lionel parts. In fact you do too, just check their parts pages and order.

I have a Authorized Lionel Service Station. I order parts for all repairs, not my customers, Warranties or other wise. Lionel sends my parts and I have them in one to two days, repairs out the door in fourteen days or less. Also don't blame Lionel service, blame your local shop.
