Last week the Milwaukee Road Historical Association (MRHA) held its 4 day annual convention here in Wausau.  They had full days of workshops and talks about the history of The Milwaukee Road's Wisconsin Valley Line through Wausau.  They had great meals, including a brat fry at the Hiawatha Restaurant, and trips to local spots of interest associated with railroading and the Valley Line.  On the last day they had tours of local layouts.  The Blueboard Central Division of American Flyer Lines welcomed convention goers last Sunday.  Management pulled out all the vintage Milwaukee Road equipment that they could find.  It was a field day for folks who wanted to take excursion rides on the Blueboard Central, or just wanted to watch trains.  Even some none Milwaukee Road equipment had to be pressed into service to handle all the folks that wanted to go for a ride up to the end of the line at Star Lake, the destination of the old Fisherman's Special.

 

 

 #10 and #11 of the Hiawatha fleet were assigned to head up The Northwoods Hiawatha during the heydey of passenger trains up to the resorts in northern Wisconsin, and they were running excursions last week again.

 

 

 

Management even managed to find some box cab electrics to illustrate the electrified portion of the Milwaukee Road's line to the Pacific Northwest.

 

 

 

Vintage steeple cabs and passenger cars were on display.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Everyone enjoyed the night time run-by.

 

 

 

It seemed pretty natural to have the beautiful streamliners chuffing through town.

 

 

 

And of course "you know who" was very curious about all of the activity.

 

 

Summer is a great time to go rail fanning or take a ride on an excursion railroad.  The general consensus from convention goers here in Wausau was that a good time was had by all.

A late addition to the SPF.

As many of you regulars are aware the SD3Railers sponsor a "Kid's Club" at the museum. One of the goals is to teach the kids about all the aspects of the hobby. Several months ago one of these "instructional projects" was started but unforseen circumstances had resulted in it taking much longer to complete than anticipated.

The project was complete caboose rebuilds of really marginal cars, at best. New paint, trucks and axles when needed. The kids did the work and last saturday they were able to show off their results.
