Bernard, the Williams box cars on first glance do appear similar, save for the additional underside detail to the chassis. But they are about one inch longer than the Lionel 6464 traditional type of box car (which also includes all the variations of 9200, 9400 and 9700) and about 1/4 inch wider and about 1/2 inch taller.
Andrew, I've always though the Lionel cars were larger than S scale, though the smaller cars commonly get lumped into the S-scale category of size. I've compared Lionel small 027 cars to American Flyer similar cars and they are still larger and due to the simplified detail level, look even more out of place in my eyes.
Maybe the 6464 is close to length of an S-scale 50' box car, but I once did an actual comparison of one of the so-called K-Line "S-gauge" box cars (which were really the prior 5000 series 027 box cars made from the MARX tooling) and these were still bigger than one of the S-scale Helper box cars. Plus on a detail level, they looked even odder together. Since the Lionel 6464 types of box cars are even larger, I would imagine the size disparity would be even more obvious.
The one 027 labeled car that I believe is probably pretty darn close to S-scale is the older pre-Atlas Industrial Rail caboose, which is small by even 027 standards and looks really odd with the Industrial Rail 0 guage trucks. Since that car was new to UMD, I always wondered if it wasn't "borrowed" from an actual S-gauge car tooling.

The Lionel 6464 is the length and height of an S Scale 50' Box Car.
The Williams Golden Memories Box Car looks the same as the Lionel 6464.
The Williams O Scale 40' Box Car is taller.

I shouldn't answer cause I really don't know. What I do know is that most companys have some variables. If your looking for exactness stick with one brand. But go watch a real train and you'll see look alike cars are few unless it's a unit train..

Hello Forum,
Can someone tell me if there is a difference in length, width, and height between Lionel Archives (6464 based) boxcars and Williams boxcars? I think I read somewhere before (but can't find it now) that the Williams boxcars were actually larger than the Lionel 6464 series. Any help would be appreciated.
