It's track-work season here in northern Illinois and the work trains are everywhere. Long trains of green UP ballast hoppers. Burro and Ohio cranes (lettered for C&NW and MSTL) and even an old caboose lettered for CGW! The Metra parking lot in our town abuts the UP's small yard - and it's a sight to see all the different vehicles, especially as the longest yard track is right next to the lot. You can legally get with 3 feet of everything. A huge Ohio crane there now - and a MP15AC burbling behind it.

Watching and listening to a rail grinder at night is a sight to behold.

Ugly work trains

While coming down the highway to work (south of Wylie, TX), I was surprised to see a caboose on the KCS line! As I got beside it, I realised it was a work train. What I first thought were diesels turned out to be the ugliest rail grinding equipment I've ever seen. Makes the MTH weed sprayer look great by comparison!
