Lionel Standard Gauge 318!! Need help!!
Posted by lionel2 on Saturday, May 22, 2010 5:41 AM

Hello,  I have a Lionel standard gauge 318 electric locomotive that I cannot get working right.  It does run in both directions, but very slow.  I am using a Z transformer to power it.  So, I have plenty of power, but the loco just is not going anywhere. And I have to push it a little bit to get it going in both directions.  I replaced the brushes and cleaned up all the dirt and gunk.  It has original wiring and a manual reverse unit lever on the side.  It is 100% original.  Should I replace the wiring??  I have no idea why it runs so slow.  Any help will do.  Thanks.

I had a similar problem during a #8 restoration. Some wiring became caught between the shell and the top of the gear/wheelset after reassembly. When removed for inspection, I discovered the insulation rubbed away on the wire.

Okay, I have replaced all the wiring with new wiring.  But, the manual reversing unit.  I am not sure how it goes back on.  The lever is in place, but I do not know the placement of the 4 contacts on the switch reversing unit.  The wires are all in the correct place, as I replaced one at a time.  But, I do not know which of the 4 contact is toward the outside of the loco.  Anyone know how to put back on the reversing unit on the 318? thanks

You think I might have a bad armature?  Or maybe the windings on the motor fild assembly are bad?  Would that cause the loco to run slow or not at all?  Thanks.

Anyone know what might be wrong with this loco?  The wheel turn freely, but the loco cannot move under its own power.  Thanks.
