I opened up this discussion in Coffee Pot - where maybe it best belongs? -Timboy

Why? So only the "Coffee Pot" people will comment? Reminds me of my asking, a few years ago, why there is so little talk about the York Meet on this Forum. The reply I got was, "Oh we talk about it a lot...via personal emails".

Yes indeedy the coffee pot thread is for the "None of the above" non-train topics to be discussed.

Each of the Kalmbach train title forums has one.

If you don't like it, don't read it. Cyberspace is pretty large. No topics are NOT being posted in order to allow that thread to run.

The topic of the star rating, and the potential for its misuse, has been discussed here before.  But it bears repeating.

Personally, I don't rate threads.  I read and post here for a number of reasons.  I read what interests me, then take what I want or need.  I am happy for the diversity of brand, era, and topics.  I also appreciate the shared expertise, experience, and method.

An overall sense of acceptance and individual respect keeps me here versus participation on other forums.  No question is considered with disdain, no matter how elementary.....that is how I got here in the first place.  Others patiently and graciously answered my questions.

Re "ruling the roost," some members have been around here for the better part of a decade and have gotten to know each other about as well as one might over an internet forum.  I am a relative newcomer but never felt excluded.  But as Timboy stated well, perhaps not in these words, acceptance often comes with familiarity with the topic and with familiarity of the people posting.  As in life, I don't expect anyone to warm up to me until I give them something to warm up to.  No one is driving this bus.  Everyone is driving this bus at a level or depth of their own choosing.

A good example are a couple of AF guys who waded into what some consider this forum to be: Lionel turf.  Go see what they have done here, what they have contributed, what the response has been, and then tell me where the element of exclusion is present.  I don't see it.

Re the Pot thread being termed inane.  It was launched as a discussion outlet for off-train topics both serious and light.  If one considers off-train topics "lacking sense, empty, or void," so be it.  That is your take.  Some consider the Pot thread a place to get to know one another and use it that way.  There are regular contributors, and the list of regulars grows.  I wasn't a regular contributor, but now I am......choice is great.  Friendships have been hatched on the thread.  Is that a bad thing?  Nope.  Empathy has been hatched there too.  Is that a bad thing?  Nope.  If the number of hits and views is high, is it because the Pot is filling the bill for what it was intended to be?  I think so.

Jack

Timboy, I agree with you. Now we can both be on the "no star" list. A few members "rule the roost" on this Forum.

Look at the most inane thread on this List - Coffee Pot. Look at how many hits it has. What does that tell you about the make-up of us on this List? -Timboy

It is silly and should be removed.  It is strictly arbitrary.

The rating system means less than nothing and should be removed, IMHO.

John,

Threads can be rated by users with the star system.  Other than that, it isn't really important and is often abused.
