I just received a 2010 Lionel catalog set from Charles Ro Supply. I'm sure a lot of others have received it as well. from whatever source. In the larger catalog, there are several conventional classic sets being offered, one of them being the #1587 Girl's Set. I'm wondering if anyone has considered this set, or has any "inside information" as to the quality and accuracy of colors, details, etc.
It was a bad idea when they first came out with it in the 50's, it was a bad idea when K-Line, Williams, et al, tried to reproduce it in the 90's, and it's a bad idea now. Why don't these train manufacturers let that set go to rest?

It is surprising how popular they are when they are running at the museum. But by far the most popular is Thomas & Friends.

If my memory serves me correctly, the original postwar sets weren't too pricy about 3 years ago. No?

IF IT WON'T COME LOOSE BY TAPPING ON IT, DON'T TRY TO FORCE IT. USE A BIGGER HAMMER.
I saw two Postwar Girls sets at York, both were priced over $5,000.
This will be the third reproduction by Lionel of the original Postwar set. Lionel must have a pretty good idea how many they will sell.

I guess that all depends on one's idea of "too Pricy".
As long as I have been in the hobby, the original Postwar Girls set was a desireable item for collectors, with a high price tag.
On the other hand, in the Modern Era, the girls set has been reproduced. Perhaps a couple of times, I didn't keep track.Regardless, at least the first reproduction set did drop into "blowout" status, but over time, folks decided that they wanted in, and the reproduction set price went back up. I think they go for a premium these days.
Perhaps this was the this set you were thinking of.
The only Girls Train piece I have is the hopper car (6436-500), which is officially "lilac". However, it can pass for gray in a non-pastel train.

My grandaughters (8 and 6) aren't super interested in trains. But, when shown the girls set they do not want/care for it. When it"s their turn to run them, I have to get out the Polar Express set, Disney, aquarium and Wizard cars. Naturally they love all of the accessories.
On the Girl's set, the engine is a Hudson, right. 2046?????

According to the catalog, the new CC version loco is a "2037-500LT 2-6-4 Steam Locomotive." Must be a 2037 Prairie.

2037-500 is the number of the original. Lionel liked to call their 2-6-4s "prairies"; but they're really "Adriatics", with no American prototype.
The funny thing is that there are now more post war lionel girls sets than were actually produced. Many people who think they have an original set actually have counterfits. I would not personally want one.

Thanks for all the interest and replies to my question, but I think the replies got "off track", pardon the pun.
One reply was bang-on. I'm looking for a good Lionel REMAKE of the original classic Girl's Set, without having to mortgage my house.
My original questions were simply whether anyone had seen this newest-issued set and could he or she attest to the accuracy of the colors and markings. Absolutely no offense to the respondents, but that's all I was looking for.

If you take a closer look at the price sheet that Ro sent you along with the catalog you may notice that the latest CC repro 1587 girl's set is not due to arrive until September, so I'm guessing that no one has seen it yet, thus rendering it impossible for anyone to be able to ascertain the accuracy of the colors and markings.
From what I hear, the colors will be correct and the set packaging will be like it was in 1957. Also the engine will have the pulmor motor like the original which the previous release did not have. The previous set was advertised to have a pulmor motor, but was released with a can motor. Lionel issued a free extra car for those who were disappointed. I cancelled my order when I heard can motor. If your interested in the girls set, The 2010 set is the one to buy. I have one on order.
The new re-re-release will differ from the last two in these ways:
1. The 1991 re-run did not have rivet detail on the boxcars or the horizontal rivet row on the N5c Cabin Car. They also had plastic brake-wheels and die-cast sprung trucks. The set DID however come with an ivory transformer with a gold handle like the original.
2. The most recent remake had the the rivet details back on the boxcars and metal brake-wheels, but had die-cast sprung trucks, and lacked the PullMor motor and transformer.
BOTH engines had the classification lights moved from the top of the casting at 10 & 2, to the front of the casting. This was done to the tooling by Lionel/MPC.
The NEW set will have the PullMor motor, full rivet detail on the boxcars and caboose, metal brake-wheels and die-cast bar-end Post War style trucks.
No transformer is listed in the catalog.
No mention of the Classification Lights position.

Had a customer curious about the set yesterday till they saw the price, Over $500 list, and that's without command control. Suggested he take a look at Williams and see what their price is like. We can get either.

I believe that williams list price is even more like $620 for the freight set and $525 for the GG1 set.
Bachmann has really cranked the price of Williams since taking it over.
I have argued this with them but they always claim this and that but I have the catalogs to back myself this set has jumped over $200. sugested retail price

" If my memory serves me correctly, the original postwar sets weren't too pricy about 3 years ago. No?"
About 4 or 5 years ago I saw an UNOPENED girls set go for around $17,000.00. About a year later the same set was sold by Stout for $25,000.00.
Bill T. he was saying list for lionel just over $500 so wanted to see Williams so I quoted Williams list price I know you can get them a lot cheaper but I was comparing list to list as he stated list on lionel.
Williams by Bachmann listed catalog prices are really bogus. Any of the major dealers of Williams products discount 30 to 40%.
I like to share something concerning these sets. Yes the 2010 set is a much better set. Here it is July 2015 and I have made the decision to add a 2010 set to my collection. I did some research for the between the 31700 set I believe was made in 2002 and 38340 which is a much better set without the ivory transformer made in 2010. What I can tell you is I could find this set 31700 set all over the place, but the 38340 set was a very hard one to find. The 37100 sets were not selling and the highest price I saw in research is $375.00 and there was many to pick from. The 38340 2010 set there were very few of these sets and when I did find this set the lowest price I could find was $569.00 which was the list price in the 2010 Lionel catalog. I only found 4 sets and the highest price was $669.00. I did my research for a week and this is what I came up with. In my opinion the 2010 set will always hold their value

Reminds me of a tale...
Several years ago we were at Lady Firestorm's sisters place for Thanksgiving. I'd brought a copy of "Classic Toy Trains" along and had left it open to a page where the Conventional Classics Girls Train (properly called the "Lady Lionel" was being advertised. Well, the look of horror on my sister-in-law's face AND her daughter's was absolutely priceless! Quite the feminists, a "Lady Lionel" will NEVER darken the door of their house!
And don't get Lady Firestorm started on the subject! Whenever she see a picture of the "Lady Lionel" her upper lip curls enough to tickle her eyebrow!
In my opinion the 2010 set will always hold their value
I don't think its a good idea to purchase toy trains with the idea that they will appreciate, or even retain their value. Consider the money spent.
I've always wanted to add a Girl's Train to my collection since I first learned of it. To, me it doesn't matter if it's the original or not. Is K-Line the only manufacturer who actually produced extra cars and a whole town's worth of accessories? If I remember correctly, they even added white track to the set. It may have been a good idea to add one or two cars and/or accessories a year in those pastel colors the set used. That way, owners of the set would have a way to expand their Girls World © TO Enterprises.
By the way, Steve, what is it that makes you feel the 2010 set is better?
