Lionel NYC F3
Posted by Fox14120 on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 4:55 PM

Does Lionel currently have an O gauge version of the NYC F3 for sale as a stand alone or passenger set and not the freight set? I know Williams has a version out of the F3 but all i see are paintings or small pics can't tell the quality of it by those but looks like there's no glass in the windows. Is that the way the engine is or just the way the pic looks?

Current Lionel production only has the NYC F3s in the classics freight set. You can probably find the F3s for sale from a set breakup. I would buy the entire set however as prices have been found as low as $350.

If i can find the freight set for $350 then that's not a problem. So far everywhere i've seen the freight set it was for $500- $600. Think i saw it on sale for $485 at one site. With the freight don't recall if is the dummy A unit or B unit was with it. If i could find the engines from the 80's or 90's that'd be ok too but all ebay has are the post war ones. I wanted the 5 car passenger set from that time period too.

I bought the Williams NYC F3 and ran a photo of it on p.33 of the December 2004 issue. It has clear plastic in the portholes and a nice, more realistic die-cast pilot. I review the Canadian Pacific version of the same loco in the July 2004 issue. I have a side-by-side with my old NYC 2344 to illustrate the similarities and differences between the models.

If you are a subscriber, you can find the review (and a photo of the CP engine) under July 2004 reviews. A video of the outfit is under videos, June 2004 (the month it was actually posted). be advised, though, that how the video files were saved and processed in 2004 is not the same way we do it today, and the file and image sizes are pretty small.

Saw the set(s) he had a bunch, at York $350. I like Williams too but the NYC Fs have a color shade that does not match anyone elses. I have The CPs and the same applies to them, colors are way off.

Williams/Bachmann are two blocks from my work and I stop in all the time to talk and see whats new. The F3's are nice and from what I saw run well. I bought a GP9 and it runs beautiful. I would not hesitate to by a Williams/Bachmann engine. Just wish they would put some sort of sound system in them besides the horn and bell but then price might be effected. They are worth the money.

I have about nine Williams engines and would buy more when I can afford one. The F-3's are nice but the F-7's are better in my opion. Have a Williams GP-9 for about 10 years and it still runs like new and has very good pulling abilities, it even fell from an upper level on my layout(about 15 inches)and still runs great. The gears in a Williams engine are metal and not plastic, and that makes them last longer.

Lee.....I always enjoy your posts.  Always informative, and the ones on the F3s and the F7s always grab my attention since one will probably will be my next acquisition.  I am torn between Williams, postwar Lionel, and the later releases.  Postwar would be my "if price were no object" preference.  But.......price is a consideration.

That's the one i originally found and the prices are from about $350- $600 for it. Actually found a better set i'm looking for it's a NYC F3 Passenger set but the only problem is that it came out in the early 2000's and pretty much has dissapeared when i do a search for the product code on either the tubular or fast track versions. (6-31932 or 6-31944) It's pretty much everything i wanted and wouldn't have to go buy the passenger cars after dropping $350 for the engines and cars i don't need. Otherwise i don't want to but if i have to pay $500-$600 for everything it'd prob be easier to buy postwar or modern engines and cars since seen alot of NYC F3's engines for sale on smaller sites looking for the set.

Getting it that way is an option also. Right now i have time i'm not in a hurry by Nov the latest i want it by. There should be some train shows before then biggest problem for me is most these ones around me don't advertise too well. Had a show last month about 2 miles away at one of the fire halls didn't know about it till 4 days after it was held.

I am not sure where you live, but can you get to York or Allentown or Hamburg PA? These cities in PA usually have a large number of vendors at their shows and you should be able to find information about these shows very easily. The show at Hamburg might be called the Spring Dutch Train show.

If your buying the NYC F3's to run and run often, I suggest buying the new models or Williams. I love my post war trains but I have become really tired of having to tear them down every 3 hours or less to clean armatures and brushes or repair something. It is going to be mostly Williams for me from here on.

I'm up near Niagara Falls. Right now the Hamburg one is the big one i'm shooting for but that's not till late Nov and about then the weather starts to play a role in traveling in this area also. The others are easily a 2.5 -3 hours ride one way through the hills and mountains of southern NY and Northern PA. There's another big one around here but it's not till Dec right before xmas. The one i missed last months there's about 3 a year but none till Sept now. We have a few train shops around here but most don't carry O and the 2 big ones that do are a hike and have weird hours. I'd like new over old of everything but it's a matter of what i can get for how much since right now working on a new layout also. Again i'd love to find that set i mentioned above the only other set i found simular to it has an Alco engine and looks even harder to find.

I personally like the "complete set" approach no matter how it is achieved.......but I'm into the nostalgia approach not matter how it is achieved.....prewar, postwar, or otherwise.  And an F3 is my next acquisition dream.

I agree with the set approach, you may save a few dollars by just buying the engine but for a little more you can have it all. I have several sets that I bought for the engine, it just made more sense dollar wise.

I live in western New York and am also a train vendor at the shows you have mentioned. The next big show is at the Central Terminal in City of Buffalo believe it is second weekend of September. This is one of biggest in the area and relatively new.It is all gauges show but alot of O gauge.I really like this show lots to see.Batavia,N.Y. train is probably the best in area because it is trains only no dolls,no Nascar,no figures etc. This is held twice a year in March and November.Hamburg,N.Y. you mentioned is another big show but it is mixed venue not just trains.Hard to find sets at these shows they are hit or miss.If you are looking for a Williams NYC 5 car aluminum passenger set I have one for sale. All you need is the F3 A-A set.Wish you luck.As far as listing of upcoming shows many of the hobby shops have flyers prior to shows.Other two good shows in area are Leonard Post and Heartstone show both in Cheektowga,N.Y.

Sorry didn't respond sooner had other things that needed attention. Yeah i personally want to get the complete set instead of buying pieces here and there. Again biggest problem i have is i want the passenger and not freight set already have alot of NYC freight and the engine i have can't take much more on so it'd sit around collecting dust. If i can find the one set from above or one simular even if older then i'm all for it. Yeah i saw those events also think the only thing that i don't like is that i have to more or less wait till Sept for the show season to start otherwise till then it's if i can get lucky online or one of the local stores has a set. Did you send it to my email address or my message box for my Trains.com account rtraincollector? Checked them both and neither one recieved it checked the spam folder also and wasn't there either.
