455 Oil Derrick String Replacement
Posted by jeffthetrainguy on Saturday, May 1, 2010 8:08 PM

I have a 455 Oil Derrick that the string broke on and I'd like to get a good replacement string. I imagine that any of the crane cars would use about the same thickness. Regular thread seems too thin and doesn't look right. Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem with a 2305, Getty Oil Derrick.  It has a chain attached to the plunger that goes into the well.  However the chain is broken and the plunger is missing.  I'd like to replace these pieces but don't know where to look.  Any ideas.

If you have some old (and I mean old) fishing line from a casting reel, that might work.  Also, thread from a leather sewing awl.  That's usually oiled, however, & might not work.

There are kits to repair vertical blinds that obviously have oodles of that line.

Good call on the vertical blind repair kits. I'll give it a try and report back. Just for comparison, I'll get pricing from a couple of train parts guys and report back on that as well.

Check your local fabrics store. They have thread in thicker sizes for buttons and other applications.
