Terry,
My Lionel PRR Mikado does this. It has TMCC and RS5. And the smoke is terrific.
Sure there are! This feature was first introduced by Lionel/MPC in the 1980's. Any of the engines with the vertical chamber mechanical smoke unit featured this, including the N&W "J" from 1981 and its sibling Southern Pacific Daylight GS-2 and GS-4, up through the 1989 B-6.
At the top of the unit there were clear plastic hoses mounted, directing some of the smoke out put to the tops of the cylinder heads. On the B-6 the hose were not necessary because the height of the mounting corresponded already.
I don't have a complete list, but yes... it was an advertised feature.
Jon
I don't recall any Lionel locomotives with that feature.
Some of the later Marx #666 locomotives do have that feature. From the factory, these all had plastic shells. The running gear fits the earlier die cast shells, and many have been converted.
Does anyone know if Lionel offers any steam locomotives with the feature of steam (smoke) exhausting out the sides by the wheel driving linkage? If so what are the model numbers?
Thanks, Terry
