Lionel 671 RR issues
Posted by JDBoomer on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 9:18 AM

I'm thinking about buying a Lionel 671 RR  6-8-6 and everything inside the boiler except the motor is missing! How much do you think it'd cost to replace those parts? I'm thinking about buying a clunker engine that has those parts. I offered him $75 because of its issues and has no tender.

I wouldn't buy it. It would probably cost about the same if not alittle more to replace all the parts such as the smoke unit and e-unit and probably a few other parts as well.

JD,

I bought a 2020 that was also missing everything but the motor, and it cost me $70 to obtain the parts.  I paid $110 for the 2020 and put another $70 into it.  Was it worth it?  In this case, I think it was.  It looks great, runs great, and is a good smoker.

Unfortunately, items like this are a gamble.  One way to look at it is that the missing parts could be gone for a reason.  If there is an underlying problem,  that engine might have been stripped for the good parts.  Or it may have just been taken apart for service at some point and the work was never finished.  If you are going to buy, look over what is present carefully.  You might get lucky like I did.

If you do consider buying it look it over very carefully. Check for stripped screw holes like where the rear ladders attach. Check to see that ALL wheels are on tight and do not slip back and forth sideways or fall off. Is the motor good?

Seems like the motor is good. Somebody juryrigged the pick up roller and it keeps shorting out the transformer.

My Smokebulb 671 is a basketcase. Bought all the parts and put it together. Cost me alittle over $100. But all that  matters is I'm happy with it.

Sign - Welcome JD B,

While it may seem like a good deal to you, in the long run you may spend more than it's worth and may not be able to get parts for it. I was trying to repair a Lionel lighted caboose that the center roller pick-up shorted out the truck assembly. The truck assembly would cost me what I paid for the caboose new a few years ago, so the caboose won't get repaired.

If you really want a nice 671 complete with proper tender, you might want to consider buying a re-production from Williams Trains who is now owned by Bachmann. www.bachmanntrains.com then click on Williams.

JD,

One thing that I forgot in my previous post was that the weight that was missing from my 2020 was included in the $70.  Since the 671RR lacks the weight all together,  the parts would only be about $50.  Depending on the source, it might not even be that much.  All of the collector insulators and related parts are readily available and inexpensive as well.

Just talked to him again and said he'd sell it for $25. Not bad at all, comes with a searchlite tower too but the darn lite fixture is gone!

I think you'll be OK at that price. Hope you got it!
