Ok not an engine that goes around the track searching for its buddies or such...(just wanted to get that out of the way before somebody said something, lol ) You know a search like Lionel and MTH to see what they made years before. I see stuff all the time on ebay etc and I never knew they made that particular car or engine. And it could keep me from buying another brand because I like Atlas better in some cases.

Generally if I see an Atlas item and want more info I'll use a Yahoo or Google search for "Atlas xxxx-x". Most of the time, as long as the part # is accurate, you'll get several hits for dealers and Atlas.

Also, if you email Customer Service at Atlas and describe what you are looking for, they will provide the part number so you can order it. I have used their Customer Service this way many times. They are quick to respond. That is the route to go.
