Well, it was an interesting day on the Mt. Graham and Arizona Eastern Railroad. Always on a tight budget, the maintenance crew struggled to get one of its ancient locomotives on line. Alas, their best efforts would not have it ready in time.

Unfortunately they had a priority cargo of electronics for the Mt. Graham International Observatory which was vital for the upcoming Very Long Baseline Interferometry project. Without these components, the Arizona leg of the observations would be lost.

In desperation, the crews turned to a waiting Amtrak relief engine. The recently overhauled Alco FA was scheduled to pull the Texas Eagle the following day. Since Amtrak gets free passage over Arizona Eastern rails, they were only too happy too oblige.

The Alco backs up to her train. Though used to some odd consists, this was unique for the passenger line.

She pulls away headed to the mountain.

The train arrives at the telescope just in time. The electronics are offloaded and hustled into action.

As observations commence, the Alco heads back to the main line to be ready to be on the point of the Texas Eagle later in the day.

 Have a great sunday!

Bob

It's a rainy day in Buckeyeland, so I thought it would be a great time to look back at all the cars that rode the rails on the Baltimore, Ohio and Wabash RR this last year.

And of course, the most famous car of them all, the rare and expensive "I Love Ohio" boxcar.

I wonder what ever happened to the Chief's Carolina Cripple.

 Hi Buckeye Riveter,

Beautiful layout and great photos of historic Ohio road names. I am just starting on my new 6x16 layout- have built the table and just painted the top with a primer coat of brown paint. I may be able to add the first loop of cork and track later this afternoon.

I will be running my TMCC Pennsylvania and Baltimore & Ohio GP9s, Erie-Lackawanna U33C, and I just ordered the new Lionel Erie GP9. These are the road names that operated through Akron, Ohio and I grew up with the E-L mainline right behind my backyard!

Your photos are a real inspiration to me. Thanks for posting them!

Plank....Welcome and thank you for the comments.  I'm still working on the layout.

Here's the whole layout, with the left side still under construction.

This week, I assembled a train of oil cars from various sets to inaugurate a Sunoco Special... Leading the way is 4-6-4 no. 8600. I have 4 Sunoco tank cars acquired over the years, and not a duplicate in the batch. A close up view shows a three dome silver tank from the Conventional Classics Lackawanna freight set, and a two dome silver tank from the New York Central F3 Conventional Classics freight set. Next is a two dome black tank bought separately in the early 1990s, and the single dome chrome tank that came with the steamer and caboose in the Empire State Express freight set from the mid-1970s. All that oil passing one of the final destinations... the local gas station and a neat car or two.

One thing about SPF is that I enjoy opening the post two or three times to see all the different photos as they are added.  Thanks for posting.

No wonder Lionel ran K-Line out of business.  Got this C&O 2-6-6-6 that is a K-Line [original before Lionel got them] and crusie was added when purchased by the original owner.  Was new in the box.  Had not been even been test run.  Got it for a great price.  Put it on the track this afternoon.  Set it up in Legacy.  Fired it up after changeing ID.  Is the sweetest running steamer I have ever owned.  Better than the Lionel scale Big Boy.  She pulled a line of K-Line [original too] die cast hoppers and never slowed up.  Will smoke you out of the room.  Whistle is great too.

 Engine has great details.

Chief,
Mine is still at the repair shop. Treat this one with great care because there are NO parts for them any more. My guy is trying to rebuild some parts for me... been nearly 2 years since I've seen her run. Sad
