8x8 or 8x 10 layout
Posted by dbcoach on Sunday, March 14, 2010 8:12 PM

I'm looking for a cool track plan for an 8x8 or 8x10 space. I'd like to operate 2 seperate lines. Contour is a bonus. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

This is a space for an island layout, right.

Have you looked at www.thortrains.net , they have a bunch of layouts. They might not have one for your specific footprint but there might be some that perk your interest and lend themselves to adaptation to meet your requirements.

http://www.trainplayer.com/ has a free demo and hundreds of track plans you can actually run to see what you like.  I found point to point plans are great fun!

The way I decided on the track plan was to choose:

A main railroad

A few real locations

An approximation of the industries

The terrain

"yes, it is probably an island layout. I'm not sure what else to do with it"

You could run your layout around the walls of the room and operate it from the middle.  An island layout, especially one as large as you proposed, needs room around the sides for access.  You can get more layout, longer runs, and gentler curves into a room by putting yourself in the middle and the trains on the outside.

Before you decide on a particular layout type or design, you should see if there are some around your area that you can visit and get some ideas.  Many folks spend a whole lot more time planning than building.  You can also get some magazines that have different layouts in them.  I believe there are some books on John Armstrong's layout and some other notable folks.  You could have a "temporary" layout that you can run your trains on while planning the permanent one....it is good to be able to run your trains, keeps interest high.

Sketch out a plan that fits the room, around the wall, with tracks that are O-72 curves in the corners.
