I think its a deisel, there is no tender. I did try that switch, no help. Should l be able to move or turn the wheels? I mean their locked tight!

This site has wiring diagrams for AF locomotives, and also sells a complete line of repair parts. If you look up the wiring diagram for an Alco PA (which is what your Comet is) you will note that the light bulb is on an independent circuit from the motor, so the fact that it works only means you are getting power from the track to the bulb. 

It could be a simple bad connection to the motor.  I recently restored an AF steam locomotive and in the process I discovered and repaired multiple cold solder joints.  It could be a defective reverse unit, but by moving the lever on it you are in part bypassing the unit, and in theory the motor should run.  Which means you might have a bad motor.  AF PA units are sought after items, if you need to put some money into repairing it, it is  most likely worth it.

The wheels on a Flyer diesel can't be turned by hand.  Where are you in PA?

Is that a steam or diesel engine?  If it it an AF two rail steam engine look under the tender and see if you notice a small lever sticking down, if so move the lever to the opposite side and see what happens when you put both the engine and tender back on the track. Also with AF steam engines the tender picks up the power and not the engine, so the reverse unit is mounted in the tender with a wire harness going to the cab of the steam engine.

If it is a three rail AF the reverse unit should be in the engine itself.

Also can you please give the number on the engine or tender?

Yep I have the same engine... when you cycle the power on off, nothing happens right?

Its the E unit. AF trains weakness is their sticking E unit. If you feel comfortable in cleaning it, you will need to take the shell of and see where it sticks on the drum, if you not you will need it repaired.

If you live in Michigan and could make the drive over I could set you up in 10 minutes...

I have an American Flyer Comet, and when I try to run it the engine on the track, the light comes on but it just sits there. I noticed the front wheels are locked up or frozen. Does anyone have any suggestions?
