Home Owner's Insurance will not cover the full "collector value".   If you have enough trains, and if they have a collector value as apposed to a used train value, you should get a "Floater Policy"  to protect against fire, flood, theft, being dropped, earthquake, and in transit.

You will find adds in Classic Toy Trains for train insurance.   If you belong to the Train Collectors Association, as I do, they can arrange for insurance with Peerless Insurance, a member of the Liberty Mutual Group, through the Donald J. Burns Agency.   In this case the TCA certifies the value of your collection to the Agency for you.   I have a Blanket Policy, when it is renewed each year, I just send a check and photos of my current collection, I can sleep at night.

I have insurance with the same company as Don.  I keep an inventory on MI Trains and send them an updated copy each year with my check.  BTW it costs a lot more to add the same value to your homeowners or insure with a separate policy from another company that does not know the train business.

Just to add, Donald Burns is a member of the Train Collectors Association, that helps.

I do not have a seperate policy but my homeowners is fairly comprehensive.  The key would be to have an accurate record of what you have and the condition, and relative value.  I have pictures of just about everything to show the condition and version as that makes a big difference sometimes.  Keep a flash drive in another location with the pictures on it.

Insurance on American Flyer/Lionel Collectibles?
Posted by O-GaugeOscar on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 10:04 PM

Does anyone have a separate insurance policy for collectibles such as American Flyer/Lionel trains?  If so, with whom (underwriter)?  If not, do you insure your layout and collectible pieces under your homeowner's or renter's policy?  What extra "insurance hoops" (if any) did you jump through to obtain coverage? (Btw, I am not in the insurance business.)

Thanks.

Mark
