Pics of my trains (fairly new to O scale)
Posted by Bill54 on Thursday, March 4, 2010 8:09 PM

Atlas C&O 4-4-2 I got on 2 March.

Lionel Denver Rio Grande I got about a year ago

Lionel Rio Grande and Atlas C&O trains at the far corner of the layout.

The box the Atlas train came in also an Atlas three pack expansion set I got for the C&O train

I've had the Lionel Denve Rio Grande Western for a little more than a year.  I started building this layout / benchwork last summer and had a HO layout on it for Christmas.  Then I decided to go with the O scale because I just like it better.  So recently I ordered the Atlas train and this coming weekend I intend on widening the layout to be able to use 072 curves.  When finised I will have three tracks all interconnected.  More trains and track are coming soon.

Good sturdy lookin' benchwork.  Handsome finished room.  Trains a'runnin'.  Looks like you're on the right track.

Are you going to fill in that "access" hole, or leave it open.

The open section in the center will be closed with the foam.  However, I'm not fastening it down, I will be just setting it in place so it can be removed for access.  I just set this up to run the trains for a while.  This weekend I plan to start the widening process.  I have 072 curves for the outside loop and want to run a passenger train on that loop.  The two inner loops will handle freight traffic with some switching going on.

WOW, COOL !!!  I just bought the Rio Grande myself....How do you like it? I don't have mine set up yet, I want to do a around the wall layout and I'm waiting to get all my stuff together first. Also, I just bought a MRC ah501 pure power transformer 135 watts. I still have a long way to go before I am up and running but I guess thats part of the fun.

I wanted the Rio Grande because I like the larger locomotives.  It's really a nice set for the money.  I paid $239.00 a year ago November.  The only thing I've noticed is that the engine sort of rocks side to side slightly as if the axles are off center on one of the wheels.  It doesn't affect running and actually looks like the real locomotives do when they are rolling down the tracks.

I'm in the middle of widening the layout so I can run 072 curves around the outer loop.  I'm also looking at the Lionel Legacy Control system.  I'm just starting out so now may be a good time to purchase something like that before I start buying a lot of standard engines.  There seems to be a lot of the Legacy and TMCC locomotives on the market and if it follows the same trends as HO it won't be long before most of the engines made will have DCS, Legacy or TMCC in them.

Enjoy your new Rio Grande, the sound is great and loud.  The smoke is pretty nice also.

Unless you have the room for it 072 can be pretty big to use, maybe 054 would work as well. I use mainly 031 and 042 and a few 054 curves.

About PS-2 or PS-3, MTH has PS-2 installed from the factory with all their engines and they work without the DCS command base, just NO command abilties.

Lionel and others offer TMCC or Legacy as an optional feature at this time for their engines. But more companies are using TMCC or Legacy System than DCS or PS-2. Don't know about the compatibilities of the two systems, Lionel Legacy and MTH DCS.

With H.O. from what I here there is one universal command control system compatibility, in plain English any command control will work with any base unit. At this time not so in O gauge!

Thanks for the info Lee.

I'm currently using 060, 072 and 036 curves on the layout.  Since these pictures were taken I've widened the layout another 8".

As for the Legacy control system, I've been doing a lot of research to see what I will need.  I think I've figured that part out and hopefully within the next few weeks will purhcase the equipment needed.

The difference between the Legacy/TMCC/DCS systems and HO's DCC (Digital Command Control)  DCS doesn't work with the Legacy/TMCC and Visa-Versa.  ON the HO side of things you have a similar issue where if you have a remote from NCE it won't control a layout that is Digitrax controlled.  However, the big differende in DCC is that the newer Decoders (anything from 2005 and newer) can be controlled by any DCC system.  I have MRC, NCE and Digitrax decoders in my engines and run them on an NCE system.

But now I'm setting the HO stuff aside and going with the "O" guage stuff.

Thanks,

Bill
