BTDT.  This is probably the place.  We are mostly 0 gauge three rail.  Good, knowledgeable bunch of guys here who can help you with most anything 'toy train' or 'high rail'.   Welcome.

 Danedog,

Let's see you mentioned O-scale, that's it!!  The password, (could have been S scale too), you are now an official member.  Sign - Welcome

And we sure could use a good bridge builder around here.  Thats for sure!!

Regarding the Toys vs Models,  hmmm I dont know which side to argue on that one.  I have some really expensive toys, and expendable models also.  One things for sure, I enjoy all of them!  However, it just doesn't sound right, "He who has the most models wins!"

Howdy, Danedog  Sign - Welcome

Some (but by no means all) of the 'regulars' on the Model Railroader forums have knee-jerk (accent on the, "JERK") reactions to any mention of O scale.  Apparently no one ever told them that one of their icons, John Armstrong, was an O-scale modeler - three-rail O scale, at that.

Since I work in an odd scale (!/80, aka HOj) those jokers don't know that the vast majority of my freight cars are - gasp - tinplate!  Real, honest to Murgatroyd galvanized steel sheet, the right shape and size but utterly devoid of fancy details.  Hey, they work, and that's all I ask.

As for toys versus models - around Sin City models usually come in 1:1 scale, are way to expensive for us common folk, not to mention dangerous to one's relationships to non-models.  One look at my wife's reaction to the showgirls who live up the block says it all!

I personally prefer that line to read:

He who has the most fun, wins!

So, who's having the most fun?  The line forms right behind me...

There was no excuse for anyone screaming at you, but I can understand why some scale modelers would find this a hot-button topic. I am old enough to remember when all scale railroad modelers were looked down at with ill-concealed scorn as eccentric overaged children "playing with toy choo-choo trains." It took a lot of years for that prejudice to go away, and in the process a large portion of the scale community became hypersensitive about anything resembling the topic of "toy trains." Some of that still endures to this day.

Most of that sort of prejudice has gone away by now, but it hasn't been forgotten by some in the scale modeling community. And the question of what's a "toy" and what isn't can still raise hackles, even here.

Personally, I've done my share of scale modeling, and I also collect and run postwar Lionel toy trains. I'm indifferent to what anyone thinks about it, but I also understand why some people feel that way.

The way I look at... if it doesn't run on the real rails... it's a toy. I could give two ^$%&s if it is scale or not, it is a toy. If you are going to get that worked up over scale vs non-scale then most likely you aren't enjoying the hobby and need to go see your doctor for some serious meds.

Now where did I put that engine...

Welcome Danedog......I'm immune also.  I like what I like and really don't care what others think.  Just don't try to tell me my preferences and interpretations are inferior.  As Brent said, pass the meds.  Some would then start to argue brands and dosages.  For some a colonoscopy is in order.

Welcome to the CTT forum.  Don't let those other guys get on your nerve.  This is a great place.  We have fun and save for a few non-regulars that drop in once in awhile and try to cause problems, everyone is treated with respect.  I have read some magazine forums which the scale folks got on the publisher for including a photo and article on a dare I say it....3 rail layout that had absolutely perfect scenery detail and even rolling stock weathered to perfection.  Only thing out of their norm was a 3rd rail.  Folks actually wrote in that if another photo of a "toy layout" were in future issues, they would pull their subscription to Railroad Model Craftsman....oh, did I just say the name...sorry.  It is a real shame that folks act that way.  I actually almost subscribed to the magazine till I saw that.

Again, Welcome,

Dennis

Wow, some harsh responses to a few of your initial posts.  Made me want to wade in, but it's probably better for me not to.

On the subject of bridges, take a look at this link: Toys of Steel

DJ,
You would have had to 'experience' some of the 'polite' welcomes that the other forums give those that aren't of their ilk.

Let's just say an Airman walking into a bar of Marines would receive a warmer welcome!

I've heard tales of Jarheads buying Airmen drinks, if those airmen happened to be Ground Pounders, driving A-10 Warthogs, especially after they had unloaded some muntions in some very convenient places.

One word:  Sign - Welcome

Isn't it sad when some people are so absorbed in their own perspective that they are easily perturbed by insignificant terminology?

Just let "your" trains by-pass "their" stations.    Enjoy the hobby.
