MTH 4-6-2 steam engine problems
Posted by KEVINK22 on Monday, March 1, 2010 12:22 PM

I recently just got power to my layout, and i was trying to run my MTH Milwaulkie Road Hiawatha 4-6-2 PS-2  steam engine; but it would not budge. I know it is not the proto sound battery needing to be charged because i have sound coming out of it, and trying to change direction is impossible. It's like it is locked in neutral or something along those line. I was wondering if anyone had any advise on this situation. Thanks.

Even though it is PS2 if you have a very weak or bad battery they will act as you have described. Turn off the smoke and reduce the volume, so it won't drive you buggy, and power it up on the track for a few hours. Afterwards give it a start-up try and see what happens, if it still won't start do you have a similar PS2 loco that has the same type battery(MTH has two different battery systems in PS2) that could be tried in your steamer?

Along with what Doug mentioned try charging your engine with a wall charger that MTH sells for under $20.00. Another thing is are the track and wheels clean? Do you have a lighted or illuminated Lionel car on the track? If you have a lighted car on the track try removing it, as I had a lighted caboose short out while using the DCS system.
