Newest aquisition from the Lena, IL train show
Posted by stebbycentral on Saturday, February 27, 2010 4:21 PM

I went north today to a MRR show and swap-meet in Lena, IL.  Lena, IL is a small town on Highway 20, just northwest of Freeport, IL.  Which is in turn a small city just west of Rockford, IL.

Anyway I had never been to this particular show before, and I found it very worthwhile.   The show filled three gymnasiums in the local elementary/high school complex.  They had several nice operating layouts, and a number of vendors.  The event repeats tomorrow from 10 to 4 for anyone who lives in in the area.

To business; for some time I have had this nostalgic impulse replace the first train set I hade ever owned.  And today I found enough vendors with the right pieces at the right prices. So here it is:

As you can see it's in need of some TLC.  I would appreciate feedback from anybody who has had experience refurbishing old AF equipment.

One particular issue involves a white powder that has accumulated on the couplers, wheelsets, and some other plastic parts.  Any specific suggestions on how to remove it without damaging the parts?

I have figured out what is wrong with my brain!  On the left side nothing works right, and on the right side there is nothing left!

First, congratulations on reacquiring the pieces of your original train set!

If the white powder on your train is mildew, you should be able to remove it by applying some Crisco vegetable oil to the powder and wiping off. Good luck on getting the set running.

I have used WD-40 to remove mildew from leather upholstery in cars. Bruce Baker
