Hello My friend has a old American flyer from his grandpa. I know nothing about American flyer trains. He would like to find out how old it is and if he should insure it ? The loco has motor 1210 on the side and American flyer in gold and the loco is black no other marking that I can find. He has two pass cars they are green one is a railway express car #1205 and the other car has #1103 and has American flyer above the windows in gold color. It has 3 rail track and it looks like the loco has a roller in the middle to pick up power. I will get some photos up later to night. Thanks for any help Frank
It's prewar Flyer from the early 1920's. There is one thing - are you sure about the number 1210? I'm not aware of any steeple cab with this number - there is however, as 1201. Probably the best thread on the internet concerning prewar Flyer is right here on this site. It's over 30 pages long and it has pictures and descriptions of almost everything Flyer made in the prewar period. The page from the thread cited below has information/pictures about the steeple cab engines.

Greg's thread has a picture most likely of the pieces in question. He is very knowledgable about American Flyer especially prewar. As far as value, I'll look in my books when I get home this evening and if I find any info I'll post it.
Jim
Hello I double checked the # and it is 1270 the seven look like a one. It has a lot of missing paint. I look at the thread and seen one there and it looks just like the 1270 in the photo. I have not looked for the pass cars but will later. That is one cool thread it has way more info then I was expecting. There is one crossing signel and thing that has on it circuit breaker I will look for those to.
Jim that would be great. I have no idea what something like that would be worth. It's the only thing he got from his grandpa. His mom found it in her attic last fall.
Thank you for the help Frank
Sorry about that - I meant to include links to the pages with the passenger cars too. See below:
