Actually, no.  What worked for me was the purchase of a new audio power board, $35 (+ $28 labor). Worked like a charm.  The engine is REALLY cool now, what with the diesel Railsounds roaring away. It's great!  All's well that ends well, even if it does cost you a few unexpected bucks.

Thank you both.  I've checked whatever connections I could - all appears to be in order.  I don't know what a "system reset" is, but today I'll take it to my local Lionel dealer and run it by them - I'd imagine they'd know how to do a "reset".  They have a nice TMCC layout there that they can test it on.  If a reset doesn't work, I'll leave it in their hands; hopefully, they can do some open engine surgery on it and return it to me sounding like the real McCoy!  Thanks again!

Agree with Buckeye, pop the shell and check to make sure all the boards are properly seated. If that doesn't help do you know anybody that has a TMCC layout where you could try a system "reset"?

One possibility could be that the sound card came loose during shipping.

Railsounds - No Sound. Need Help!
Posted by TJCoss on Saturday, February 20, 2010 7:14 PM

I just received a Lionel RS-11 (6-28521) from an Ebay seller. The engine was un-run, new and in the box. While the switcher runs fine, it produces no sound whatsoever. (it does, when in neutral, make a "ticking" sound, at times.) I have the sound switch set to the ON position; I've rotated the volume set screw to various positions; I've installed a battery in order to produce "continuous" sound. Nothing. I'm running this engine in conventional mode, using a KW transformer. I have two 6-5906 sound activator buttons installed, one for the bell, the other for the horn. This set-up works fine with my Lionel Alco S-4 switcher (TMCC, Railsounds, Odyssey, essentially the same as this RS-11). I'm hoping that someone may have some ideas that I could try in order to produce sound. It's hard to believe that it just doesn't work. I'm thinking it must have something to do with my set-up, even though this set-up works fine with my S-4. Does anyone have any ideas?
