Maybe I'm telling you something you already know, but ... to get the bearing plate off the frame, straighten the four tabs that project through the bearing plate. Just bend them enough to get the plate off. You may also have to unsolder one or more wires. Now you can get at the underside of the control shaft. To put it back together, slip the plate back on the tabs and bend them just enough to hold the bearing plate securely.

Hope this helps -- Martin

Thanks,   I'll look up the exploded view,  I'd found the Q docs on the olson site,  but like you say it's not exploded to show what should come apart...and more importantly,  what shouldn't!

I'd got the case apart and the knob off,   but came to halt as it wasn't easily obvious what came off next.

The nice thing is that these older products are user serviceable and not throw away items.

Sign - Welcome Voodoo!

IF IT WON'T COME LOOSE BY TAPPING ON IT, DON'T TRY TO FORCE IT. USE A BIGGER HAMMER.

The knob is a press-fit -- just pull it straight off. If you can't get it with your fingers, use a pair of screwdrivers on either side to pry it off. Use cardboard or something to protect the faceplate and the edges of the knob. You may be able to do it with one screwdriver, moving back and forth from one side to the other.

Then go here:

http://pictures.olsenstoy.com/searchcd2g.htm

and click "RW Transformer" -- the RW has the same voltage control arrangement and parts as the Q. You'll get links to PDF pages; choose the bottom one where you'll get an exploded drawing of the control shaft, etc. You'll probably need the R-36 contact arm and/or the R-82 fiber washer with the notches in it. The R-36 is available from parts dealers; not sure about the R-82 washer. There's also a parts list (but no exploded drawing) under "Q Transformer."

The shaft is peened over at the bottom, at the R-38 steel washer. The washer and peening hold the shaft on the bearing plate. Years ago (20 or so), I made this very repair to my RW, but now I've forgotten how I got the R-38 off the shaft. I do remember that I peened it over again when I completed the repair. Repro shafts are available from parts dealers, though I re-used my old shaft.

Hi,  I'm new to 'o',  I grew up on Hornby oo in England,  there's still a (large)  box full in my parents attic.

Anyway,  onto my question.  I have an old type Q transformer that's functional,  but the wiper is stuck in one position,  and the speed/voltage control rotates 360 degrees.   Having disassembled it  I can't see how the speed controller is removed from the faceplate of the transformer to see if the wiper can be 'reattached' or if a replacement part is needed.

Thought I would ask on a forum first before trying to 'force' anything.

 Thanks!
