whats a good way to remove rust from steam engine running gear without harming the nickel coating??? a wire brush seems a bit harsh....thanks

Try a Scotch Guard Pad.

I have found Scotch Guard rotary tools for my Dremmel at train shows, and for cleaning they can't be beat.   There are different stiffness of Scotch Guard, too.
