Dividing A-B-A units
Posted by tbwilson4 on Saturday, January 30, 2010 6:03 PM

Posted document.write(''+ myTimeZone('Sat, 30 Jan 2010 14:07:32 GMT-0800', 'January 30, 2010 05:07 PM')+''); January 30, 2010 05:07 PM
Since no one currently makes an E-8,F-7 E-7,or any other passenger engine in C&NW colors, I was wondering what would be involved in splitting my MTH E-8 A-B-A into two independently controlled units so I can run 2 different train sets? I would assume this would require adding a PS2 board to the slave unit. Cost effective? Other options? Thanks

Assuming you are already running DCS/PS-2 on the A-B-A ----

MTH sells an "Upgrade Kit" (one for diesel and another for steam) to convert to PS-2.  They are priced from $150 to $180 depending where you buy it.  The Kit contains the control boards, sound board, battery, all new wiring, all new lights, a speaker, and a 40 page step by step manual.   To convert a powered (slave) unit should not be too hard, the kits were designed to convert PS-1 locomotives to PS-2.   Once installed, you will need to download from the MTH Web Site (free) the proper sound and locomotive software and then download it from your computer to your locomotive.  Once done, you would have two independently controlled "A" units that could run alone or, using the "Lashup" command, together.

I have converted five "G Gauge" locomotives made by Aristo-Craft to PS-2 using the kits.

Artisto "G Gauge" RS-3 with DCS/PS-2 added.
